It is with the deepest sorrow that we bring you the heartbreaking news of the loss of our beloved husband and father, Arnold, at 8 am on the morning of July 29th.  As you know, he was in the hospital for the past five months and fought very hard to stay with us one more day each and every day of those 165 days.  We are forever grateful for each of those days, as we were able to spend them by his side, reminding him how much we and his friends and family loved and appreciated him.

We hope that you will join us this weekend as we both mourn his passing and celebrate his life and lasting legacy within our community.  He was a mentor and dear friend who touched so many with words of wisdom and encouragement; we know that you will miss him as much as we will.

A visitation for our family and friends is scheduled for Saturday, August 1st, from 5 to 8 pm at Stanfill Funeral Homes.  Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, August 2nd, at 11 am at Stanfill:

Stanfill Funeral Homes, Inc.
10545 South Dixie Highway
Miami, FL 33156
Phone: 305-667-2518

Sunday's service will followed by a short ceremony and interment at:

Mount Nebo/Miami Memorial Gardens
5505 NW 3rd St.
Miami, FL 33126

In lieu of flowers, donations to honor and continue Arnold’s legacy of  Service may be made to:

July 22, 1933 - July 29, 2009

Arnold B. Galperin, dedicated Rotarian and community leader, devoted husband of Sondra for 46 years and father of Noelle and Gregory (Polina), passed away of natural causes on July 29, a week following his 76th birthday.  Arnold was an Air Force fighter pilot, an entrepreneurial management consultant, and a highly respected leader of The Rotary Club of Miami.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Arnold’s love of flying began at age 16 with the purchase of a Piper Cub.  After studying Physics at Wayne State University, in 1955 he joined the US Air Force, graduating at the top of his classes in both pilot training and jet fighter training, and was selected to attend the prestigious USAF Fighter Weapons School.  Flying F-86s, F-104s, and B-47s, he later joined the Puerto Rico Air National Guard, achieving the rank of Major.

He moved to Miami in 1970, building a successful career in management consulting as President of Bello Martin Galperin Associates.  He avidly pursued photography and classical music and was an early adopter of personal computing in the 1970s, acquiring one of the first Apple computers in Florida.

Arnold was passionately dedicated to the Rotary International ideal of “service above self” and proudly contributed to his community for over 41 years.  He served actively in The Rotary Club of Miami, holding numerous club and district-level offices including President of The Rotary Club of Miami.  For his service within Rotary Arnold has been honored multiple times including as Rotarian of the Year, as a Distinguished Rotarian, and this year with the Lifetime Achievement Award.  He is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and a Rotary International Foundation Benefactor.

Arnold helped create the Microcomputer Education for Employment of the Disabled (MEED) program at Miami-Dade College and chaired its Business Advisory Council for 15 years.  As Chairman of the Pinecrest Elementary Citizens Advisory Board he was a founder of the Aides for Classroom Teachers (ACT) program.  He helped establish a perpetual Endowed Teaching Chair at MDC, and he also gave his time as an arbitrator for the US Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

Predeceased by parents, Harry and Sara, and sister, Joy Gorosh, he is additionally survived by sister-in-law Judy (John) Miller, niece Shelley (Richard Kraut) Grant, nephew Michael (Kwan) Gorosh, nephew Johnny (Janice) Miller, niece Cindy Miller, 4 great-nephews and 1 great-niece.  Visitation will be Saturday August 1, 5 pm-8 pm, at Stanfill Funeral Home, 10545 S. Dixie Hwy., with funeral services on Sunday August 2, 11 am at Stanfill followed by interment at Mount Nebo.  In lieu of flowers, donations to honor and continue Arnold’s legacy of service can be made to The Rotary Foundation of Miami, 247 S.W. 8th Street, Suite 402, Miami, FL 33130.

From:  Roy Gonas, PDG

Very sad, indeed. Arnold was an outstanding Rotarian.  His service as District Secretary 1998-1999 was exemplary---the finest, I believe, any District Governor could hope to have.

DISTRICT DRIVE FOR MEMBERSHIP

We have planned four major Membership Development Events based on the three major reasons folks join a Rotary Club: Business Networking, Fellowship and Community Service.  The first will be a business networking event to be held at one of your regularly scheduled club meetings in October.  On November 15, Rotary Day will be celebrated by the Miami Dolphins at their game against Tampa Bay .  What a great opportunity to invite a friend or associate to enjoy Rotary Fellowship.  April will be the month for Community Service Project events, where perspective members will be invited to work along side Rotarians at various club projects throughout the District.  Finally in May, we will have another Fellowship Event to be held at Marlins baseball game.

In addition to our Membership Development events we are planning a Membership Seminar for all 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 Club Membership Chairs to be held in March.

Each of these events has been designed to help District 6990 Rotary Clubs recruit new members.  The RI District 6990 Public Relations Committee will invite the public to attend your October business networking event and April community service project through public service announcements and ads.  Details concerning October’s Business Networking Event will be sent out the first of next week.

We are looking forward to your enthusiastic support of our 2009-2010 Membership Development Plan.  Rotary was meant to be shared!

 Yours in Rotary Service,

Christopher T. Morrison

DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘CAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

http://www.rotary.org/newsroom/downloadcenter/pdfs/eclub_list.pdf

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.  Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club. To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

http://cedarrapidswestia.clubwizard.com/IMUpload/online%20makeup%20copy.jpg

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

1.  Read a variety of current articles in the programs section and/or choose articles from the Archived Programs list and/or information from the Avenues of Service pages. You will be required to answer questions. There is space on the makeup request form for up to three articles to be reviewed, however you will need to read more than three to meet your 30 minute visit obligation.

2.  At the end of your 30 minute visit, click on Make-up Request Form from the drop-down menu at the top of the page OR the bottom of each make-up program.

3.  Read the Makeup Request Form carefully, and follow instructions. The form will appear once you press the SUBMIT button (one time only) and an email copy will be sent to the email address you proved. This can be forwarded to your club secretary so your attendance records are properly updated.

Rotarians can also designate eClub One as their home club.

Members in eClub One are usually experienced Rotarians who are unable to belong to a traditional club because they reside in a remote location or they are engaged in a demanding travel schedule. Those applying for membership in eClub One must provide an endorsement from their current District Governor, current Rotary club President, along with letters of reference from two Rotarian colleagues of their current club..

eClub One has standard requirements for memberships, including charges for dues and administrative fees. Participants also must be willing to take part regularly in the Rotary eClub One community by taking on tasks and responsibilities. Members are required to also have regular access to the Internet and be willing to acquire the necessary skills to participate in the activities of Rotary eClub One.

Rotary and eClub One are on the cutting edge of the technology age. How this evolves will only be determined by periodic evaluation and the involvement of its members. For today, however, it is an outstanding tool for Rotarians to makeup missed meetings and keep in touch with Rotary happenings throughout the world.

For make-ups anywhere around the world when traveling internationally: http://rotary.org/support/clubs/index.html

For the past 20 years, Citizens has established a reputation as a productive community partner and a leader in environmental education. Our innovative programs help to reach South Florida’s multi-cultural and multi-lingual populations.

Citizens began in 1988 as the first multilingual environmental educational organization in the US.  Mr. Milian, the Cuban born founder, was concerned about water conservation. He realized that the perception of new immigrants was that they were not concerned about the environment.  He began the organization to works toward positive social change and re-build communities and community spirit.

Their first project was called “PLEA” – Project for Language Education and Action – using the environment to teach language.  This involved training 1,200 teachers.

Citizens is a non profit, non advocate organization working to inspire you to be good stewards of environmental awareness within S. FL’s diverse communities. The goal and vision is to provide an understanding of the issues and to be informed.

As a student of the Miami Dade school system, Kelly was not taught about preservation of the treasures we have outside.  Citizen is about teaching this information to all ages.

For children:  The Community Science Workshops offers hands on experience for cutting edge science programs in an after school setting. It encourages and inspires children to consider careers in science.  Example of projects:  create a hydrolic bat, make an aquifer, mold a human heart.  Four Miami Dade Public School sites are targeted including Tucker Elementary.

For adults:  the Urban Greening and Community Forestry Program – explains all of the benefits of native plants and habitats. Initiative programs include:

·       Neighbors Replanting Neighborhoods

·       ReVive:  The Virginia Key Restoration Project

·       Go Native!  Native Nursery – for educational purposes but also for sales

In the process of educating about native trees, their benefits, and their uses in our community landscape, we have found one overarching challenge — access to native plants. To address this need, we created a community nursery at our Urban Environmental Center.

Funded by the Miami Dade County, City of Miami, SFWMD, Dade County Public Schools, donations, foundations

This organization has multiple partners.  They are open to working with Environmental Education Providers, Civic Organizations, Faith based organizations, DCPS, Dade Parks, Ntl State Parks, FIU, MDC, National Network of CFWs, Rotary, Rotaract, and more.

SERVED in 2008:

Served 4,614 people:  children 3,272 and adults: 1,342

Number of trees planted:  400

Number of community events: 21

Field trips 20

Number of p lants tree donated:  1,200

Number of volunteer hours:  2,000

Buying a historically designated bungalow with bond money two blocks away from the new Marlin’s stadium site. They will plant with native landscaping.

A main focus is tree planting within the city of Miami.  They work in Leisure City with the Habitat for Humanity program, They work educating the owners and the entire family once the house foundation is poured.

This organization is the premier environmental educator for those new to this area.

This organization’s logo is so very similar to Rotary Internationals 2009-10 logo

CITIZENS hosted its first 2009 native Plant Sale on Sunday, August 2nd.

The proceeds from this sale help to sustain our GO NATIVE! The nursery enables us to continue with the native plantings in underserved communities, plant donation for schools and other organizations, and ongoing propagation of native plants.
