SOUTH MIAMI ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW

Have you asked a local business to be a sponsor?

They make our art show a success!

FOOTBALL MANIA FUNDRAISER

The profits go toward the various charities that our club supports. $300 has been turned so far!

From email:
“I've sold 15 and my pal Sergio is taking some to his office where he'll hopefully sell 5-10 more.  This is to all of our fellow Rotarians as I realized that everyone must know someone who works at a place with 100 or so employees, many of whom are interested in giving to the community and are interested in football.  This makes it easier for everyone to accomplish our club goal of everyone selling at least 10 books.
I'm fairly certain I'll sell the remaining 5 that I have this weekend, for a total of 20, and I'll get another 10  on Tuesday to sell next week.” - Michael S. Mills

Mike Mills, Ann Fisher, and Mickey our Football Mania Coordinator each took 30 books to sell!!!

How does Ann sell 30 books?

She keeps a list of who she sold to in previous years and emails a note asking if she can send a couple of books?  When she gets a response, she just mails them out the next day. They mail her the money in return.  People think in terms of $20’s instead of $10’s.

Here is how it works:

For a $10 donation to RCSM, you receive a Football Mania book that is good for 17 weeks of NFL regular season football. That equates to less than 60 cents for each week that you are eligible to win.

Each week, your uniquely numbered book has 2 different teams assigned to that week. You can keep track by following the instructions in the book to determine which 2 teams you have for a given week. The teams change every week. Your 2 teams for a given week are not necessarily playing each other.

To win $50 on any given week, your 2 teams for that week will have the highest combined scores. To win $10, your 2 teams will have the lowest combined scores. You may tie another Football Mania player, in which case your winnings will be split.

Players may keep track each week of their assigned teams (different each week), but it is not necessary. Winners each week will receive a check in the mail from RCSM the following week. So, it is important to print name and address legibly on the entry form which is turned in with the $10 donation (entry form is on page 3 of the book - just tear it out). Once the entry form and $10 are turned in, all you need to do is watch your mailbox for a check.

BUILDING OUR BOND WITH VISITORS FROM ABROAD

Annette, a member of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, originates from Annapolis.  She lived in New Orleans and worked in the hospitality industry before moving to S. Florida. She has three sons:  eldest US Naval Academy, the middle son attends Columbus and youngest is at Epiphany.

Started in the 1940’s with Latin American diplomats, MCIV was incorporated in 1959 by the US Dept of State Office of International Visitors. . For 48 years they have been greeting people of influence, engaging in citizen diplomacy, to help shape foreign diplomacy. People make people feel welcome

In 2006 – visitors came from 98 different countries.  Annually there are over 5,000 visitors selected for their professional excellence by US embassies abroad to come to the US and learn from the American experience.

Participating in this program is a delightful way to meet fascinating people.  It is your direct link to current and future world leaders from around the globe!  As the official South Florida host for the U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program, we welcome hundreds of distinguished visitors every year.  We arrange their professional itineraries where they'll meet with their U.S. counterparts and share best practices and our members are given the opportunity to invite a visitor to dinner in their home or a local restaurant and be Citizen Diplomats.

At MCIV we attract alliances, build bridges and connect cultures, all through citizen diplomacy. We believe a warm handshake marks the beginning of a life-long friendship. We belong to a nationwide network of community-based volunteer organizations that is part of the National Council for International Visitors in Washington, D.C.

Visitors tour several cities for 3 weeks after arriving in Washington, DC.  Miami competes with other councils to have the visitors come through our area. While in Miami, they stay at the Doubletree in Coconut Grove.  Each is given a per dium from State Dept’s Foreign Aid.

August 11 – 15.  a group of 8 individuals from Turkey and Georgia , Ukraine who combat trafficking of humans will be in town.  She is looking for a host for a Saturday evening dinner.  After that, there are guests coming from Argentinina who deal with white collar crime (next week)

Staff go on professional appointments with the foreign guests, they are always with an English language escort. The hope is that they these visitors take back a positive view and understanding of our open society. Eisenhower’s call to action with sister-cities. There is no one particular outcome or indoctrination in mind from these visits, they are exposed to a balanced approach.

The program, with its network of cities,  was nominated for Nobel Peace prize.
