DISTRICT DRIVE FOR MEMBERSHIP

We have planned four major Membership Development Events based on the three major reasons folks join a Rotary Club: Business Networking, Fellowship and Community Service.  The first will be a business networking event to be held at one of your regularly scheduled club meetings in October.  On November 15, Rotary Day will be celebrated by the Miami Dolphins at their game against Tampa Bay .  What a great opportunity to invite a friend or associate to enjoy Rotary Fellowship.  April will be the month for Community Service Project events, where perspective members will be invited to work along side Rotarians at various club projects throughout the District.  Finally in May, we will have another Fellowship Event to be held at Marlins baseball game.

In addition to our Membership Development events we are planning a Membership Seminar for all 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 Club Membership Chairs to be held in March.

Each of these events has been designed to help District 6990 Rotary Clubs recruit new members.  The RI District 6990 Public Relations Committee will invite the public to attend your October business networking event and April community service project through public service announcements and ads.  Details concerning October’s Business Networking Event will be sent out the first of next week.

We are looking forward to your enthusiastic support of our 2009-2010 Membership Development Plan.  Rotary was meant to be shared!

 Yours in Rotary Service,

Christopher T. Morrison

The Future of Rotary Is in “Your Hands”

http://api.ning.com/files/Vw2tD7yc-WezAWV1jMj*V0R6nSWaRCQWGXkUn*Gu4EFBevOA2YR0OLoQpg-5*fgUf*6IK*dS6emUNWs0pCqOE71KAZX0hKYm/WorldInYourHands.jpg

This simple truth will be our theme for 2009-10, serving as a constant reminder of the personal responsibility that each Rotarian holds. Winston Churchill once said: “The price of greatness is responsibility.”

Rotary is a great organization, and it has the potential to become even greater — if each one of us rises to the challenge and takes responsibility for its future. In Rotary, each one of us has been assigned a job. Its title is Rotarian. Our duties are to offer relevant service locally and internationally, and to expand our club’s capacity for service by inviting professional and business leaders to become members and promoting a positive image locally. Our job description also calls for each of us to be an example of ethical behavior in our professional and personal lives, to act as leaders in our club and community, and to fully support Rotary’s highest priority of polio eradication.

The job of Rotarian brings immense benefits. We enjoy incomparable fellowship with one another and the great personal satisfaction that comes from serving others. If you believe in Rotary and its power to make a difference in the world, it is time to stand up and commit to doing the best job you can — with all of your mind, your heart, and your soul.

The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands.

John Kenny

President, Rotary International, 2009-10

Mr. Kenny’s message has been edited, the full version can be found online at www.rotary.org

DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘CAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

http://www.rotary.org/newsroom/downloadcenter/pdfs/eclub_list.pdf

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.  Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club. To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

http://cedarrapidswestia.clubwizard.com/IMUpload/online%20makeup%20copy.jpg

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

1.  Read a variety of current articles in the programs section and/or choose articles from the Archived Programs list and/or information from the Avenues of Service pages. You will be required to answer questions. There is space on the makeup request form for up to three articles to be reviewed, however you will need to read more than three to meet your 30 minute visit obligation.

2.  At the end of your 30 minute visit, click on Make-up Request Form from the drop-down menu at the top of the page OR the bottom of each make-up program.

3.  Read the Makeup Request Form carefully, and follow instructions. The form will appear once you press the SUBMIT button (one time only) and an email copy will be sent to the email address you proved. This can be forwarded to your club secretary so your attendance records are properly updated.

Rotarians can also designate eClub One as their home club.

Members in eClub One are usually experienced Rotarians who are unable to belong to a traditional club because they reside in a remote location or they are engaged in a demanding travel schedule. Those applying for membership in eClub One must provide an endorsement from their current District Governor, current Rotary club President, along with letters of reference from two Rotarian colleagues of their current club..

eClub One has standard requirements for memberships, including charges for dues and administrative fees. Participants also must be willing to take part regularly in the Rotary eClub One community by taking on tasks and responsibilities. Members are required to also have regular access to the Internet and be willing to acquire the necessary skills to participate in the activities of Rotary eClub One.

Rotary and eClub One are on the cutting edge of the technology age. How this evolves will only be determined by periodic evaluation and the involvement of its members. For today, however, it is an outstanding tool for Rotarians to makeup missed meetings and keep in touch with Rotary happenings throughout the world.

Asst. Police Chief Michael Mills introduced today’s speaker:

Henry Guzman, Detective

South Miami Police Department

Detective Guzman started a boot camp for juveniles 1988.  He revitalized the SMPD Explorers post from a defunct organization to a hands-on program touching the lives of hundreds of teens.

He’s a founder of Informed Families  a non-profit organization.  Accolades include being named Officer of the Year by Miami-Dade County on multiple occasions as Officer of the Month for the city of South Miami.  He has been recognized by Distinguished Police Chiefs from the city and from the state of FL.

As a Senior Detective he deals with large investigations such as economic crime scenes to small theft such as bicycles being stolen and everything in between.  His job requires a myriad of experience and knowledge.

http://www.theemblemauthority.com/GalleryPatches/FL_South_Miami_Police.jpg

Detective Guzman warned to be wary of open Wi-Fi networks like Panera Bread.  Be aware to check that you are connecting to your real bank where the encryption is safe.  However, a common attack is jacking the access point. Your  browser thinks you are at a “real” site and you’re at the hacker’s site. Protect yourself with firewalls and virus protection. A virus allows content monitoring which can compromise your data when the machine is infected.  The viral program allows the capturing of data from your keystrokes. Pornography and bully sites force you to visit.  75% of identity theft is information taken from the internet.

Do you receive lots of junk email messages from people you don't know? It's no surprise if you do. As more people use email, marketers are increasingly using email messages to pitch their products and services. Some consumers find unsolicited commercial email - also known as "spam" - annoying and time consuming; others have lost money to bogus offers that arrived in their email in-box.

www.ftc.gov/spam/ to report spam.

This website has information about the Federal Trade Commission's recent law enforcement actions against deceptive commercial email and spammers' responsibilities under the CAN-SPAM law. In the "For Consumers" section, you'll find tips on how to reduce the amount of spam email in your in-box.

If you get spam email that you think is deceptive, forward it to spam@uce.gov. The FTC uses the spam stored in this database to pursue law enforcement actions against people who send deceptive email.

Detective Guzman described the using of criminals’ computers to solve crimes – taking the IP addresses off of the criminal’s machines.

One case:  Dell’s Lojack for laptops – programmed established and a computer was stolen from a college by a burglar.  Sold the property.  One of the laptop’s tracking device pin pointed it to W. Palm Beach.  The police could remote access visit all of the sites stored on this machine.  Came in with attorney and brought the computer into the police station.  He tracked this person back to person who committed the grand theft breaking and entering.

Second case: Walgreens  had $1.3 million worth of break-ins into their ATMs.  A family was recently arrested at a hotel by the MIA. They would target ATMs from Tampa to Miami Dade for the last 2-3 years. They were very violent and they’ve been caught with all of their tools.
