FOOTBALL MANIA FUNDRAISER

The profits go toward the various charities that our club supports. Football Mania update:  moving along swiftly $700 collected out of the $3700 expected to collect.

Here is how it works:

For a $10 donation to RCSM, you receive a Football Mania book that is good for 17 weeks of NFL regular season football. That equates to less than 60 cents for each week that you are eligible to win.

Each week, your uniquely numbered book has 2 different teams assigned to that week. You can keep track by following the instructions in the book to determine which 2 teams you have for a given week. The teams change every week. Your 2 teams for a given week are not necessarily playing each other.

To win $50 on any given week, your 2 teams for that week will have the highest combined scores. To win $10, your 2 teams will have the lowest combined scores. You may tie another Football Mania player, in which case your winnings will be split.

Players may keep track each week of their assigned teams (different each week), but it is not necessary. Winners each week will receive a check in the mail from RCSM the following week. So, it is important to print name and address legibly on the entry form which is turned in with the $10 donation (entry form is on page 3 of the book - just tear it out). Once the entry form and $10 are turned in, all you need to do is watch your mailbox for a check.

Assistant District Governor Mike Kesti, from Rotary Club of Perrine, Cutler Ridge, Palmetto Bay, aka the club that has the longest name in US (but rivals an Indian club who doesn’t use hyphens) introduced…

DG Jim Norton

Rotary District 6990 Governor

http://www.directory-online.com/RotaryLegacy/6990/Newsletter/

0/District%20August%202007%20Newsletter.pdf

DG Jim graduated from UM, received an MBA at FIU, and was Past President of the Weston and Kendall Clubs, Jim is a member of the Rotary Bequest Society, a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and proud father of two.

Although we don’t overtly network for business in Rotary, the CEO of his company told him to join 18 years ago to do community service projects. Starting in Miami Dadeland Club he moved thru board positions and five years later was elected President.  In 1997 he moved to Weston and five years later was elected Club President in 2002.

Today he is a magazine publisher, and there is a philanthropic slant to his publication. Rotary is now his passion.  He feels bless with what he has – and he has more than he needs. This is why he gives his time, talent and resources to Rotary.

SMRC’s reputation in community is outstanding.  We warmly welcome any guests.

His 2007-08 goal is to sponsor two members.  He is asking the same of others. In the last six months, he has sponsored 6 members (4 are still with Rotary, 2 dropped out due to time constraints.)

His district goal is to have 3,000 members by 2010.  The district now has 2,200.  Five years ago we had 2,200. Zero growth in five years.  The District can help with projects, strategies to bring in membership young professionals

Goal: RCSM currently has 48 members.  If RCSM installs eight new members this year and becomes too big or inconvenient for members then the timing is right to consider spinning off another club

DG Jim started in the Miami Kendall Club and he left for business purposes.  He landed in the Weston Club acquiring new friends and a larger network.

RECRUITMENT OF MEMBERS
There are lots of recruiting tips in this months’ Rotarian

Rekindle old relationships, former Rotarians.  List of 152 past members was distributed.  Many left the club because timing was an issue in their life.  They do like serving others and would return if asked.

 1)  Telephone them to ask them to come back if club meeting isn’t good – ask that they attend another club’s meeting – break the paradigm.

2)  Recycle the Rotarian – give it to someone, drop them off at a medical office.  Fishing to find someone who will read something they will like and spark the interest in joining the club

3)  Starbucks – 8am – 10am professionals 8 ½ X 11 invitation post at the bulletin board.  Seeing it might incline someone waiting on line to inquire.

4)  Go door to door in new office buildings and shopping centers– opportunities to meet and greet and invite.

5)  Address the envelop and he will personally mail an invitation to our members’ friends, neighbors, relatives.

6)  Members who leave:  ask them to replace themselves. Either the person who is taking their place in their company or a friend.

7)  Attend the Leadership Institute at the American Intercontinental University.  To keep meaning and purpose in each member’s membership.  Knowledge is not power – knowledge combined by action and purpose is power.

Set aside the old paradigms – allow the doors to be open with everyone invited as long as you serve and put the 4-way test into action.  Building a building is like building membership

Foundation Chair – Kathy Miller
Goal:  $125 per person we did $152 per member = $7,000 in annual giving in 2006-07.

Service Committee – Linda Kaplan
Funding college scholarships history for graduating seniors for SMHS – transition to a partnering with Take Stock in Children to double up and triple our monetary power.
Rebuilding Together
Hands On Miami
We send 2 interactors to RYLA @ $250 per – could the club consider sending a child from the Boys and Girls Club child or a Take Stock child

Fundraisers

Post our events on the District Website.
UM Rotaract’s Medishare – This project is getting off the ground in Haiti.

We don’t give hand-outs we lend a hand.  Teaching how to grown their own food products and start an economic base. After completed $250 million project.

Each member should know a 30 second way, a quick commercial, that explains what is Rotary.   Rotary is better known outside of the US than inside.  It’s easy clear and understandable:  Rotarians SHARE a quality of life in order to make a difference.

Ben, born to a single mother.  Unacceptable state of being.  Others talked about his status.  Visited new minister in a church on the sly without being seen.  HE was a child of god – large legacy go live up to it.
Moral of the story – all can make a difference in someone else’s’ life .  Rotary is a vehicle to change the life of one person and make a difference.

Ask yourself:

·        What kind of organization if everyone in it were just like me?

·        How can I make a difference?

·        What can we do to make Rotary experience more meaningful and purposeful?

Never underestimate someone’s imagination and how one person can make a difference in the lives of many.

Ri President Wilf Wilkenson, is both challenging and approachable.  He came to Rotary in 1962 in Trenton, ON as an accountant.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

~If you look in the mirror and have enough to meet your needs, take the excess to help the less fortunate.

~Bring hope to the hopeless for an opportunity.

~THINK BIG!  In 1993, DG Jim was a football player on Bernie Cosar’s team

~Believe – Invite a friend, family member, associate, colleague to participate in a service project, to lunch

~Attend:  the Rotary Leadership Institute Sept 29 – 30, 2007 & Feb 3 – 4, 2008

~Address an envelop and DG Jim will send a handwritten note inviting your suggested person to our Rotary meeting.

RCSM generated $7,000 for the RI Foundation, the RI Foundation raised over $100 million - Only  4 countries that have Polio
Clean drinking water in the world – billions don’t have this common element

Change the face of America half a world away.  Build a school in Afghanistan.  RC of Jolla, CA raised $250,000 in funds.  Even with insurgents, one Rotarian is making a difference in a hostile land.

Rotary works in partnership with some of the most powerful people in the world

Rotary has noble causes to ignite your imagination

Rotary has credibility – community reputation, leadership skills

Build value like you build a business –– to further the power you have to do good

Service above self / One profits most who serves best.  Sharing means doing – to change both local community and then the world.

It takes everyone in the room to carry the torch and to share the dream of Rotary with everyone you know.

The investment of the time and effort brings tangible results and feelings of achievements.

Share, care and dare to dream.  Tie Rotary into your dreams and make them a reality.
