This would raise that $105,000.  WE CAN DO THIS!!

This fundraiser is a top priority!  We need to sell tickets to meet the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. They donated  $355 million in the last two years. Of that amount $200 million is a matching grant for polio eradication.  Our district is expected to donate $300,000.

We have raised $195,000 towards this goal to date. The balance is $105,000 yet to be raised.  If the 2,100 district’s club members can all sell just 2 tickets this year at $25 per ticket, we’d sell 4,200 tickets.

DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘CAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

http://rotaryclubofavalonpark.com/images/splashLogo_07.gif

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

1.  Read a variety of current articles in the programs section and/or choose articles from the Archived Programs list and/or information from the Avenues of Service pages. You will be required to answer questions. There is space on the makeup request form for up to three articles to be reviewed, however you will need to read more than three to meet your 30 minute visit obligation.

2.  At the end of your 30 minute visit, click on Make-up Request Form from the drop-down menu at the top of the page OR the bottom of each make-up program.

3.  Read the Makeup Request Form carefully, and follow instructions. The form will appear once you press the SUBMIT button (one time only) and an email copy will be sent to the email address you proved. This can be forwarded to your club secretary so your attendance records are properly updated.

Rotarians can also designate eClub One as their home club.

Members in eClub One are usually experienced Rotarians who are unable to belong to a traditional club because they reside in a remote location or they are engaged in a demanding travel schedule. Those applying for membership in eClub One must provide an endorsement from their current District Governor, current Rotary club President, along with letters of reference from two Rotarian colleagues of their current club..

eClub One has standard requirements for memberships, including charges for dues and administrative fees. Participants also must be willing to take part regularly in the Rotary eClub One community by taking on tasks and responsibilities. Members are required to also have regular access to the Internet and be willing to acquire the necessary skills to participate in the activities of Rotary eClub One.

Rotary and eClub One are on the cutting edge of the technology age. How this evolves will only be determined by periodic evaluation and the involvement of its members. For today, however, it is an outstanding tool for Rotarians to makeup missed meetings and keep in touch with Rotary happenings throughout the world.

For make-ups anywhere around the world when traveling internationally: http://rotary.org/support/clubs/index.html

Programming Chair Donna Gaines introduced today’s speaker:

Marci Jackson, Communications Manager

New World Symphony

541 Lincoln Road Miami Beach, FL 33139

(305) 673-3330 Phone (800) 597-3331

http://photos.igougo.com/images/p124883-Miami-New_World_Symphony_at_Lincoln_Theatre.jpg

A year ago Marci, an Oklahoma native,  was packing up all her belongings and heading southeast to South FL during Hurricane Faye. She left the state of TX leaving the comforts of boots and barbeque.

As a musician, Marci received her bachelor and master degrees in French Horn Performance from John Hopkins University and the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music.  She has performed with orchestras in Mexico, Italy, China and the US, most recently performing for the FL Grand Opera’s productions of La Cenerentola and Lakme.  When not performing or writing about music, Marci can be found exploring S FL with her dog, Bella.

This is the only orchestral academy institution in the U.S.  Michael Tilson Thomas’ had a dream to create a higher-grade musician.

The New World Symphony is dedicated to the artistic, personal and professional development of outstanding instrumentalists. The NWS fellowship program provides top graduates of music programs here and abroad the opportunity to enhance their musical education with the finest professional training. A laboratory for musical education and expression, the New World Symphony, through a wide range of performance and instructional activities, seeks to develop in participants the full complement of skills and qualifications required of twenty-first century first class musicians. Under the artistic direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, the program offers in-depth exposure to traditional and modern repertoire, with the active involvement of leading guest conductors, soloists and coaches. The relationships with these artists are extended through NWS's pioneering experimentation with distance learning via Internet2.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2473/3614133838_90771225aa.jpg

Their public face as an orchestra, is similar to those in other major cities.  The  performance season spans every weekend from September – May season.

Currently there are 87 fellows from around the world:  US, Canada, Israel, Romania, UK, Hungary.  They each undertake extensive training.  The academy brings coaches and specialists in the field of the arts to give them a well-rounded, broad scope balance to prepare for the professional stage.  This year-round program teaches the musician how to deal with unions, PR, to connect with a diverse audience.

The New World Symphony partners with Broward and Dade County school system. They send out small groups of fellows into the classrooms once or twice per week.  The musicians engage the children and explain the instruments and encourage them to play.  Sadly, there may be no other musical arts other than this program in the school’s curriculum.

Another project is called “kids in the concert hall” School bus in 100’s of students to the Lincoln Theater on S. Beach.  They are able to learn about the composers and instruments and they are  immersed into the music.  They become curious, engaged, and this sparks a lifetime of love for music. It is very powerful to prepare the next generation to open their minds to classical music.

Similar programs have been based upon “kids in the concert hall: in Kansas City and  Savannah.

A new campus by architect Frank Gheary.  It will offer – performance space + internet 2 (like Skype on steroids) so that a composer in Berlin can pair with a performer in the US with audiences everywhere there is a computer.

From the http://www.nws.edu/NewCampus/CityCenter.html

“In less than two decades, the New World Symphony has become a leading cultural institution in South Florida, generating audiences and critical acclaim around the world. Our local impact has been profound, with more than 60 annual performances, 15 percent of them free to the public. NWS brings to Miami many of the leading classical soloists, composers, and conductors of this era.

NWS also bridges the gap left by drastic cuts to arts education budgets of Miami-Dade schools. School children can attend rehearsals for a first-hand look at how a musical performance takes shape. NWS exposes this high level of artistry and creativity to more than 200 classrooms in 40 local schools annually, in addition to providing free music lessons and mentoring to promising young musicians.

http://www.cosentini.com/images/proj_pages/cultural/newwldsymphony.jpg

In keeping with the New World Symphony’s community commitment, the new campus is a private/public partnership with Miami Dade County and the City of Miami Beach. The new campus exists at the heart of the City Center Redevelopment Project, a joint venture to inject new vitality into the downtown neighborhood of Miami Beach’s 17th Street Corridor, located just two blocks from the ocean on Lincoln Road, behind Lincoln Road Mall. The City of Miami Beach will build a parking garage and 2-acre public park adjacent to the campus.”

This upcoming season includes over 60 performances with 1/3 completely free.  “Inside the music” allows the audience to sit on the stage with a class presentation.  Last year they had an overwhelming response which ended up challenging maximum capacity occupancy for fire codes.

Because the musicians play what they desire,  these performances are usually the most passionate and heart rendering.  They also become communication lectures discussing the history of the piece, why they love the piece, what is difficult about the work

“Symphony with a splash” offers a multimedia video component with a free cocktail hour  to the music of Bach and Strauss (music of seduction)

http://southfloridaclassicalreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/msojpg1.jpg

There are two children’s concerts per year – with a petting zoo (for the instruments.)

February 13, 2010 –A major gala with a concert component at Gusman – similar to when Disney showcases the music in the movies.  There will be a soiree at the Dupont Building across the street.

Look for the Sunday afternoon concert series at the Arsht.

The New World Symphony makes classical music in all of its forms accessible to the entire community.

Peter W has been a member since their very first concert.  He appreciates the enthusiasm of the musicians.

Funding

14% of the New World Symphony’s budget is derived from ticket sales. The rest comes from private donors, county budget and other diversified sources.
