Board Meeting followed by a Club Foundation Meeting
First National Bank of South Miami

President Bill called on several members for announcements and updates on several projects.

Diana Phillips announced the creation of a new sponsorship program for the CraftFest. The existing program has been renamed the Merchants Circle Program and the new program is designated the Friends of the Festival program.

To attain the “Friends of the Festival” designation requires a contribution of just $100.00 -- something that members can comfortably promote amongst their friends and contacts.

Linda Kaplan spoke of the coupon books and how she gifted her employees with them.

Her family has already recouped their expenses with discounts on restaurants and recreational activities. See David Jacobs for additional books.

Cornelia Dilley reported on her trip to Germany and gifted the club with a banner from the Rotary Club of Riedinger-Saulgau. While there, she learned that Clubs often arrange to be a “sister club” with a Rotary Club in another country.

She joined with the Germany members on a bus trip to visit a Rotary Club in Austria where she dined on a unique tasting pasta dish. She gifted the Club with a package of Austrian Noodles that were raffled off at the end of the meeting.

John Sorgie gave an update on Football Mania, the second biggest fundraiser for the club after the Crafts Festival. Ten percent (10%) of the books remain to be sold and the cut-off date is the second week of the official NFL season. The advantage is that if you sell a book after the season begins and the book has a game from an earlier week, the winner will still be paid.

A WARM WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST MEMBERLakitsia Gaines

President Bill was joined at the podium by all the Past Club Presidents for the induction of new member Lakitsia Gaines.

President Bill gave Lakitsia a welcome packet that included her membership certificate and pamphlets on the history of Rotary.

Her sponsor, Past President Mike Mills, then pinned Lakitsia with her Rotary Wheel.

SOUTH MIAMI ROTARY ARTS FESTIVAL

Saturday & Sunday, February 21 – 22, 2009

Diana:

This year, with reduced major sponsor expectations, we have created two new groups. We have always looked for sponsorships of $2,000 and up (and we still do!) but there are folks out there interested in supporting us who don't want to commit to that kind of money.

1) The Merchant's Circle sponsorship ($200) rates listing in a special box in the program and a recognition placard or tent card for window or office display to clients.

2) A Friend of the Festival ($100) will be listed in the program in the Friends of the Festival box.

Think SPONSORSHIPS!!!!!

~~which allows our club to offer future scholarships~~

Program Chair Darrell Downs introduced

Dr. Patricia A. Seabrooks,
Director of Research Support and Diversity
The University of Miami’s Institute for Human Genomics.

Dr, Seabrook, earned her Practical Nursing degree at Lindsey Hopkins, Her Masters in Advanced Physiology and Medical-Surgical Nursing at the University of Miami and her PhD in Nursing at the University of California where she specialized in International & Cross-Cultural Nursing. The Institute for Human Genomes focuses it’s research on the causes of a disease rather than how to cure it. Currently, they are studying Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, and several others.

Her topic for today -- Alzheimer ’s Disease (AD) as a form of Dementia. In a wonderfully crafted PowerPoint display, Dr. Seabrook pointed out that Florida is undergoing an epidemic of Dementia, particularly with the 80-year old and above population.Dementia is an ongoing problem as it is an irreversible disease in the brain. It may affect speech, hearing, thinking and speaking. How Dementia affects someone depends on where in the brain the disease occurs.

Dementia creates a Beta-Ameloid that blocks the tracks that neurons normally make resulting in the impairment. Balance and coordination are affected If the disease in the cerebellum. If the disease is in the Brain Stem, then signals that move down the spinal cord are impacted. Effective testing for Dementia focuses on where in the brain the disease occurs and is determined by a CAT scan. She pointed out that forgetfulness isn’t always Dementia. However, over the long haul, Dementia shrinks the brain, which adds to the problem and may affect chewing & swallowing, bladder & bowel movements -- incontinence.

Currently, the institute has a need for volunteers for testing. If you know of someone who has been diagnosed with Dementia and is willing to participate in testing, contact Dr. Seabrook at 954-443-9516 or by E-mail at: drsea@bellsouth.net
