ASK!!!!!
People you meet to do business with
ASK them to attend one meeting
JUST ASK!!!!
Their first lunch is free!

Mike Mills:

I learned many things Saturday that make it clear why membership is so important and how to recruit.
Internationally (outside the U.S., Canada & Caribbean) membership last year was up by 1,320 members. In the U.S., Canada & Caribbean, we're down more than 4,000 - so there is a net loss. This results in less people to do the great things that Rotary wants to do. We must reverse this trend.

  • We need to make sure projects interest members - to retain members. Rotarians usually don't want to just meet for lunch every week.  The promise of Rotary is offering the chance to give back to the community;  fulfillment through service above self.
  • The current generation of younger adults are very community-minded but they aren't being invited to Rotary. Maybe we could have a program for those of us over 50 to sponsor a new member that is half our age or younger.
  • Begining in September, we will have a different "Greeter" each month. The Greeter will sell the 50/50 raffle tickets. September-Felipe, October-Sunita, November-Jennifer & December-Neal. This gives new members the opportunity to know everyone and be involved.
  • New member orientation:  It is important that new members know about attendance rules so as not to drag our numbers down - and they need to know the complete Rotary picture so that they can become potential recruiters and so that we don't lose them as they question the purpose of their membership.
  • Try to wear our Rotary membership pin daily, or at least on Tuesday. This promotes pride and causes others to ask about the pin, subsequently asking about Rotary and possibly developing a new member.

FOOTBALL MANIA FUNDRAISER

The profits go toward the various charities that our club supports. Football Mania update:  moving along swiftly $2,400 collected out of the $4900 expected to collect.

Turn in your $ within the next three weeks.

September 9th is the first NFL game of the season.

Here is how it works:

For a $10 donation to RCSM, you receive a Football Mania book that is good for 17 weeks of NFL regular season football. That equates to less than 60 cents for each week that you are eligible to win.

Each week, your uniquely numbered book has 2 different teams assigned to that week. You can keep track by following the instructions in the book to determine which 2 teams you have for a given week. The teams change every week. Your 2 teams for a given week are not necessarily playing each other.

To win $50 on any given week, your 2 teams for that week will have the highest combined scores. To win $10, your 2 teams will have the lowest combined scores. You may tie another Football Mania player, in which case your winnings will be split.

Players may keep track each week of their assigned teams (different each week), but it is not necessary. Winners each week will receive a check in the mail from RCSM the following week. So, it is important to print name and address legibly on the entry form which is turned in with the $10 donation (entry form is on page 3 of the book - just tear it out). Once the entry form and $10 are turned in, all you need to do is watch your mailbox for a check.

speaking about

Women in Intercollegiate Athletics

Inge Nissen

A two-time national champion with the 1979 and 1980 Lady Monarchs, Inge Nissen left her indelible mark on Old Dominion women's basketball during a stellar playing career. Nissen earned Kodak All-American honors in 1980 and was also named to the Street and Smith's All-American team.

A four-year starter, Nissen ended her career with 2,647 points and 1,459 rebounds. She ranks second in both categories all-time at Old Dominion. Nissen averaged 19.3 career points and 10.6 career rebounds. In addition, Nissen holds several individual season records, including field goals attempted (651), free throws attempted (209), and free throws made (148), as well as single game records for field goals attempted (33) and rebounds, 28 vs. Longwood College on March 3, 1978 and against Virginia Union on Dec. 10, 1977.

Nissen led the Lady Monarchs in scoring as a junior in 1979 at 22.0 and as a senior in 1980 at 17.4. She led the team in rebounding three straight years from 1977-1979. In 1978, she blocked 12 shots in a game against Radford and Virginia Union.

A two-time Wade Trophy Finalist, Nissen was named the team's MVP during the 1978, 1979 and 1980 seasons as well as the Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year in 1980. In 1978, Nissen led Old Dominion to the National Women's Invitational Tournament Championship and ended a fine career by leading the Lady Monarchs to the AIAW National Championships in 1979 and 1980.

After her career at Old Dominion, Nissen spend a season in the Women's Pro Basketball League with Chicago. She then played overseas and won the French National Championship with the Asnieres junior team. A year later, Nissen coached the team to the national title. She is also co head coach at Florida International University with another former Lady Monarch, Cindy Russo.

Working with FIU for  17 years,  this distinguished Asst Head Coach  was helped in her career by Title 9 which set aside money for the women’s side of athletics.  The impact was amazing.  Full tuition from a  scholarship came through Title 9.

Working as a team  is a vehicle for gaining the experience it takes to succeed in business.
The experience of setting goals and  striving and suffering equipts each participant with the strength to deal with competition both on the court and in the businessworld.  Sports produces outstanding citizens ready to tackle challenges.

Women pay heavy dues in time and exersion.  FIU’s emphasis is both on athleticism plus scholarship.  The college’s goal is to take care of the academics of the student so they turn into prosperous and happy adults.

The Golden Panthers feel like the younger cousin to UM.  FIU has quality programs with sound academics. We have a very driven administration looking out for what is best for the students.

FIU success story:  100% graduation of participants of women’s basketball, 15 full scholarship allowance with 14 women players on the team.

FIU started recruiting in 1990 during European championships.  Players are contacted thru their coaches. Learning the English language is not a problem as they are contacted  one year ahead of being brought to the USA.

In the early days of the program, the price of the air ticket, the cost of the phone call made coming to the US a  huge sacrifice for the student and families.  Now with the internet, they can interface with their families at home, text messaging, free internet phone calls.

Iva Ciglar is an FIU student from Croatia.

This 21 year old  is working towards a Real Estate and Finance Major and will be  graduating in May.

She started playing basketball at 6 years old but got very interested at 10 years old.  She’s had serious knee problems since 14 years old and tore the ACL.  At 18, great player with a knee brace.  Then, she tore the other leg’s ACL.  While many recruiters came around, she was about to give up her future in the sport.  She then spoke with Coach Nisan who told her about the necessary surgery.  It was a painful but excellent experience.

Back in Croatia, a player and student is not affording the opportunity to be able to excel at both academics AND basketball.  You must chose one.

FIU needs to SELL tickets and up the attendance at  these high quality basketball games.   Come out and support us.

The first home game will be the Friday after Thanksgiving.
7pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights
Suggestion by Marty Rosen:  South Miami Rotary Club night at the FIU basketball game.
