David Jacobs selling the Entertainment coupon books for $30!  Of each book sold, $15 goes to the club!

John Sorgie gave an update on Football Mania, the second biggest fundraiser for the club after the Crafts Festival. Ten percent (24%) of the books remain to be sold and the cut-off date is the second week of the official NFL season. The advantage is that if you sell a book after the season begins and the book has a game from an earlier week, the winner will still be paid.

SOUTH MIAMI ROTARY ARTS FESTIVAL

Saturday & Sunday, February 21 – 22, 2009

Diana:
This year, with reduced major sponsor expectations, we have created two new groups. We have always looked for sponsorships of $2,000 and up (and we still do!) but there are folks out there interested in supporting us who don't want to commit to that kind of money.

1) The Merchant's Circle sponsorship ($200) rates listing in a special box in the program and a recognition placard or tent card for window or office display to clients.

2) A Friend of the Festival ($100) will be listed in the program in the Friends of the Festival box.

Merchants Circle info.Major commitments of money difficult so spend a few minutes with a friend or a local retailer as to make up for the shortfall by major donors.

Ficus Whitefly and Other Pest of Ficus

Dozen research centers around FL – all aspects of horticulture – ornamentals, woody ornamental, vegetatables, plant pathologists.

FL is a hotbed of 1 / month insect infestations.

Palm mite – comes in on the palm frond hats bought by tourists.
Only place on the continent white fly – problem for our growers shipping around the country Very difficult and costly situation for them.

Really obvious defoliated ficus – for privacy fences.
•  Approximately 75 species of whiteflies in FL
•  Piercing – sucking mouthparts – feed on the phloem
•  Adults are small, moth-like, usually with white wings.
•  Typically cause yellowing and leaf drop

Types of tree victims:  Weeping fig, Cuban Lurel, Banana Leaf Fig, Strangler Fig, Banyan Tree

Suck nutrients out and put toxins like viruses into plant

In the immature and egg stages they are typically found on the underside of leaves.  They don’t look like an insect – they are round or flat.

• First observed in 2007
• New US continental record
• Faint grey band on the middle of the wing

Another type of white fly that doesn’t cause damage Tetraleurodes

Predators collected in Miami on Ficus infested with Whitefly:  FIVE beetles feed on it.

Parasites – at least two in Miami that 50-70% kill and they are necessary for future long term control.

One month life cycle:  adult white fly 2-4 days, eggs for 10 days, crawlers for 4.2 days, nymph for 3.3 days, puparia for 5.8 days and then molt into adult white fly.

They don’t fly very well and adults don’t live very long.  Younger stages show you the extent of the infestation.

~ Monitor for early signs of infestation and natural enemies
~ When pruning trees and hedges
•  Leave or remove by bagging
•  Late instar nymphs can survive on fallen leaves
~ Current pesticide recommendations
•  Apply a systemic insecticide to the soil
•  Limited foliar recommendations

Apply a systemic insecticide – into the ground for the roots to uptake the poison into the trunk and leaves.

OTC are only really good for small situations.  For a big job, you’ll need to contract this.

Soil Applied Neonicotinois
•   Goal is to get the insecticide to the roots around the base of the tree
•   Use as much water as possible (0.5 to 2.5 gallons of water per tree)
•   Apply at the base of the tree; splashing onto the trunk is okay.
•   Prior to the drench, remove mulch or leaf litter to increase uptake.

Longer control
Foliar application offers short control
BotaniGard – fungicide for short term spraying of the leaves.

Although these insecticides may provide some quick control they will not provide long term control and may disrupt natural predators.
