Summary of the Rotary International Presidential Conference

Over 400 Rotarians and their guests gathered in Fort Lauderdale Florida USA on 24-25 August 2007 at the seventh and final Presidential Conference this Rotary year specifically focused on membership development and retention.

Attendees heard from several speakers, engaged in two panel discussions and interacted with other in structured networking exercises all in pursuit of strengthening the organization by attracting, recruiting and retaining Rotary club members.

Rotary International Director Barry Rassin, the convener of the conference, spoke of his own experiences in Rotary and how much the organization has become a part of his life. He emphasized the importance of remembering the tremendous favor that ever Rotarian is first given when a membership offer is extended and he extolled those at the conference to return the favor by, in turn, recruiting others to become Rotarians, too.

Taking a good close look at one’s own Rotary club was the message of Conference Chair, and Past Rotary International Director, Bob Menconi. In a very entertaining opening segment and then by proposing item-by-item assessment tools those in attendance were given much to take back to their own respective Rotary clubs for consideration and implementation.

Rotary International Membership and Retention Chair, and Past Rotary International Director, Ron Beaubien impressed upon the Rotarian audience the importance of Members Getting Members, or “MGM” as the best way of first sustaining, but ultimately growing, the organization.

In addresses the evening before the conference and during the daylong conference itself Rotary International President Wifrid J. “Wilf” Wilkinson made it clear that the opportunity – and the responsibility – of keeping Rotary International a strong, vibrant organization is in the hands of current Rotary club members. “Never in our history has the world needed more that which Rotary provides through projects, programs and hope for the future” said President Wilf.

Attendees were offered the opportunity to sign large “pledge boards” in affirmation of each Rotarians promise to bring at least one new Rotarian into the organization by December 31, 2007. At the culmination of the conference those boards, literally filled with the signatures of those in attendance, provided a clear visual message of the dedication to the goal set: each Rotarian recruiting one new member each and every year.

MEMBERSHIP

Share your motivation and enthusiasm!

Nothing could be more important to prospective members than the level of energy they feel during a club visit. Prospective members need to see and feel your enthusiasm as well as your pride for your membership in Rotary. When club members are friendly, inviting, and inclusive, a potential Rotarian receives the most important message: You are welcome here and will have the opportunity to participate in something important.

Recruit! We want to fill all of the tables at Bernies!!  Potential members are all around you!!  More hands means less demands on each of us – we share the projects, the goodwill

To welcome our guests, the position of “Greeter” will be at the door.

Our newest members will be welcoming…

LAST WEEK ~  LAST WEEK ~ LAST WEEK ~  LAST WEEK
FOOTBALL MANIA FUNDRAISER
LAST WEEK ~ LAST WEEK ~ LAST WEEK ~ LAST WEEK

profits go toward the various charities that our club supports. Football Mania update:  moving along swiftly $2,400 collected out of the $4900 expected to collect.

Turn in your $ by the next meeting!  If a booklet is sold after the week of football is over and it wins, the winner will be paid retroactively.

September 9th is the 1st NFL game of the season.

Here is how it works:

For a $10 donation to RCSM, you receive a Football Mania book that is good for 17 weeks of NFL regular season football. That equates to less than 60 cents for each week that you are eligible to win.

Each week, your uniquely numbered book has 2 different teams assigned to that week. You can keep track by following the instructions in the book to determine which 2 teams you have for a given week. The teams change every week. Your 2 teams for a given week are not necessarily playing each other.

To win $50 on any given week, your 2 teams for that week will have the highest combined scores. To win $10, your 2 teams will have the lowest combined scores. You may tie another Football Mania player, in which case your winnings will be split.

Players may keep track each week of their assigned teams (different each week), but it is not necessary. Winners each week will receive a check in the mail from RCSM the following week. So, it is important to print name and address legibly on the entry form which is turned in with the $10 donation (entry form is on page 3 of the book - just tear it out). Once the entry form and $10 are turned in, all you need to do is watch your mailbox for a check.

Marty Rosen, Prius owner who drove to CocoBeach and still had ½ a tank of gas left over, introduced

 Toyota Motors on Hybrids

Worked with Kendall Toyota for 16 years, Frank has sold 11-14,000 cars.

Toyota has three hybrid models.  This technology has been around for ages.  A diesel locomotive is a form of hybrid, submarines.

Electric motors have instant torque – hit the rheostat and you take off.  Wasn’t practical until the last 10 years and needed a small, light battery developed

Prius has no transmission and is not operated on hydraulic fluid. All hybrids have constant variable planetary gear set (from the turn of the century) and use nickel metal hydroid battery.

Toyota’s three hybrid models are the Camry, Highlander, Prius.  They are each marketed for a different customer’s needs.

Toyota sold the license to the hybrid system to Ford who created the Ford Escape using the 1st generation Toyota’s system.  Toyota is on its 3rd generation system.

There is a premium price of $7-8,000 more to buy a hybrid vehicle. You will pay less for a conventional Civic but if you put in long miles you earn back the cost in fuel.  It is an efficient way of getting mileage.

Ethanol is an alternative fuel burned in a conventional vehicle, sort of a corn vodka mixed with gas. 85% ethanol in typically sold in some states.  This mixture eats away at fiberglass resin.  Corn is the most widely used derivative but any starchy type crop can make ethanol.

In development: a hybrid that you can plug in.  Unfortunately, the current battery capacity doesn’t hold a charge and only goes 45 miles until it needs to be plugged in again.

The car brakes only during the last 7 miles an hour – magnets slow the car which creates friction and heat to generated electricity to recharge the battery.  There’s a savings on brake pads due to less use.

Pacemakers shouldn’t be around when it is undergoing maintenance due to its inverter.

He’s not known the rechargeable batteries having to be replaced due to age or wear, only due to accidents or due to a fault in the battery.

Like a regular vehicle, you service a Prius every 5,000 miles service with normal maintenance – engines to rotate, mechanical engine servicing.  Tax credits are being phased out and are currently about $750 per Prius
