MEMBERSHIP MINUTE:
Who is the New Generation of Rotary? Some times we think that Rotary is only for the older established businessperson, not so! We need to recruit the young up and coming generation who can bring new ideas, energy and enthusiasm to our clubs. After all, 86% of Rotarians are over the age of 40. If you are among the 14%, share why you joined Rotary and invite a contemporary!

President Linda introduced today’s students:
BRIDGING THE GAP: PEACE BY PEACE
The Nutrition Initiative for Haiti

UM students are trying to help Haiti, the poorest country in our hemisphere with a $125,000 fundraising campaign with Rotary International. This campaign is part of history, as students get together to make a change.

The money will fund a nutrition project in Haiti. The equipment purchased will process, pasteurize and package Akamil in the Central Plateau of Haiti. They are asking all fifty-one district clubs to contribute $1,000 each. With this, and matching grants, they can reach their goal. So far they have visited 31 of the 51 and have raised $34,000 from these Rotary clubs.

Rotaract is partnering with Project Medishare, a 501(c)3 founded by a team of UM physicians. It has pioneered the redevelopment of Haiti’s healthcare system infrastructure fo the past 15 years. The goal is to combat the endemic malnutrition hitting the weakest: children, pregnant women, AIDS and TB patients.

What is Akamil?
A mixture of locally grown agricultural products, primarily rice, corn, millet, wheat, beans, and peanuts, crushed and blended into a powder and supplemented with vitamins and micronutrients. It has been proven to enhance the health of children and reduce mortality rates.

Although is is low-cost and effective, its shelf life limits its widespread distribution. The goal is to introduce a pasteurized and extrusion process to prolong its viability without adding to its price.
