We’re Happy because….

·    Pansy’s oldest granddaughter turned 16 today!

·     Dr. Mike’s grandchild had its first photo taken – ultrasound!

·    Keith Douglas from the Rotary Club of Marathon and an evacuee and a Past
ADG

Thanked Past President Ed Fischer for his ongoing assistance. Keith is sending his son over to Iraq later next month.  On June 11th his family was challenged when their youngest daughter Gwen was in an automobile accident.  Ryder Trauma gave the best of care, but she was touch and go.  He made telephone calls to his Rotary Club to pray.  Internal bleeding began to subside and she was a major medical miracle.  All the prayers were part of a miracle.

David Jacobs selling the Entertainment coupon books for $30!
Of each book sold, $15 goes to the club!

FOOTBALL MANIA:

Is the second biggest fundraiser for the club after the Crafts Festival.  The cut-off date is the second week of the official NFL season.

If you sell a book after the season begins and the book has a game from an earlier week, the winner will still be paid.

Fellow Librarian Ellen Book introduced:

 Melissa Parada
PROJECT LEAD
Literacy for Every Adult in Dade
Main Library
101 West Flagler Street
Miami, FL  33130
305-375-5572

Abby Myeress, Project LEAD Program Manager was ill and not able to be present but she sent in her place Melissa Parada, her Program Assistant and “right hand man.”

Melissa was practically born in the library.  Her parents met at the Hispanic Branch Library where her father was a patron and her mother a library clerk.  Melissa started helping at the library, volunteering whiel attending Coral Park Sr. High.  After graduation, she began working as a library page in the Children’s Dept at Coral Gables Branch Library while attending MDCC.  Melissa started working full time for the library and for the next seven years earned promotions and lots of experience in all areas of library service.  She’s currently enrolled at MDC working towards a degree in Public Administration.  She hopes to go on to get her library masters degree.

Project LEAD truly changes lives by helping people to learn how to read.

This program originated in 1985 and there is still a pressing need.
42% of Miami Dade residents are reading at a 5th grade level or below.

The goal is to reduce functional illiteracy for English speakers in Miami-Dade county. The majority of people born in the US read at a 5th grade level or below.

Confidentiality – negative experiences throughout their lifetime.  Spouse who have hidden this fact from their partner, parents who now have children getting to school and they wish to help with their homework.

LEAD students lack the minimum skills necessary to operate in modern society:
~Her student couldn’t read “Speed Limit”
~Reading a job application
~Reading to their children
~Cannot read medicine labels or bottles
~Cannot follow a recipe

Goals are set by the student such as  getting a GED or filling out a job application or becoming a citizen

Each student is matched with an adult tutor – 1- to -1 meeting at a library.
All materials are freely provided.
All information is kept confidential.

18 years old
Must be assessed – so materials will be appropriate
Most students are at a pre-school and 1st grade level.
Students set the goals.

Lottie kit for tutors who’ve volunteered 12 hours or more
~Different approaches for different learners:  earplugs to prevent distractions and keep focused, dry erase boards with markers – colors variety help, easy see ruler to highlight one sentence at a time.
~Hard candy – acceptable way to fidget – allows the student to focus.

How do you find your students?
~Abby is working with Car4 – going into housing agencies who are helping people with job skills.

~The students feel a huge stigma of shame from their lack of reading skills.

~Word of mouth is the big referral to LEAD+ walk in’s.

Student and tutor meeting:  two times / week using a system relying on phonics which build on each lesson.

Basic reading gets the student to read a 3rd book.  At this level they are taught reading for living:  check writing, medicine bottles, food packages, basic skills

There are currently almost 100 active teams but there are 50 -100 learners waiting.

MDPLS hosts a workshops every three months.  Sept 20th is the next upcoming one.  Tutors are asked for a 6 month commitment

Qualities for a tutor:  Be patient, flexible, understanding.

The last full-day training session had 32 newly oriented volunteers.
