Patty Martin

Genealogical Society of Greater Miami, Inc.
P.O. Box 1648
Miami, FL  33116-1648
www.rootsweb.ancestry.com / gsgmfl@gmail.com

Patty’s historical search started when she sat down with her grandmother, asked questions and wrote down the answers.  Her grandmother was accurate with few exceptions to her stories.  She used what she remembered as a foundation and then built on it.

Patrica was born in Anniston, AL and her family moved to Pompano Beach, FL while she was in high school.  She graduated from FL Bible College in Hollywood in 1972.  She met her husband at this college and Tom and Patti started collecting genealogy information on their families in 1981.

In 1986, they joined the FL State Genealogical Society and after researching Tom’s ancestor John Carroll Houston, she received a Pioneer Researcher’s Certificate – and the deal was sealed.  She was hooked on finding her roots.

She is currently the Tech Coordinator at FL Christian School.

Genealogy helps you to connect your past to who you are today.  Old photos of grandparents show you a side of yourself.

ADVICE:

Start with what you know and start NOW!  Memories are in bits and pieces and get lost.  Family members who can verify information die,  so speak to aunts, uncles, friends of the family all offer clues to the questions you willl have.
She was lucky.  A relative who had died left her an Inheritance which was  a collection of everything and anything leading her to find tidbits of information.

Record everything you can gather at the start of your search to be able to link the generations.

Handouts:

~~Organizing your family groups. See how people fit together.

~~Pedigree chart – the ancestry of person in position #1.  Fathers line takes top half of page and maternal line takes bottom half of page.  It took her 20 years to fill in 5 generations of her family.  Always use maiden names when filling in charts.  Families with multiple ties that link back in are a fun find.

Jamestown in the 1600’s.  Some of her husband’s ancestors were there and one was a minister with a plantation. There was a massacre in 1620’s.  Her husband’s relative partially protected Jamestown residents by warning them of the impending attack.  This research makes history fit together and brings it alive for your family.   Children get interested in history in general when it’s pertianent and personal.

Share the stories that are found  especially with children.  Stories plus military records bring the tough periods in  life alive.  One of her relatives was being court marshaled and she discovered letters defending the man’s position. He seemed to disappear in AL in 1880’s and then he reappeared in an obituary in the 1890s which stated he’d lived in California. She tracked him down through voter’s records and used Google.

Excellent Resources:  MDPLS Genealogy collection at the Main Library, 101 West Flagler St., Miami, FL  33130,  (305) 375-5580

A complete collection of the U.S. Census for all states and for all available years is housed in this extensive reference department.

Other important microfilm holdings include the U.S. City Directories covering major cities from 1860 through 1935, and immigration lists. The Family Search Database worldwide is also available.

The book collection, with publications on nearly every state in the Union, emphasizes the Eastern Atlantic States.

Also offered for use inside any MDPLS library branch is Ancestry Plus, an online subscription which is a HUGE resource for hunters!

The Genealogical Society of Greater Miami, Inc. meets Oct – May second Sunday of each month except for holiday conflicts in which they meet on the third.

Some websites require a subscription
~~Rootsweb.com – opens the door to lots of local records

~~Genweb.com – provide links and resource info for various areas.

~~Familysearch.org – download link – Personal organizer which is user friendly for those starting out and it allows exporting to other software.

~~cyndislist.com

From cemetery records she  found ancestors who died in the 1400’s

There is a local Hispanic family history center located at 90th and 8th St + there is one in Homestead.

In November, there will be an annual conference in Maitland, FL which will focus on specific area of research ex. Finding your female ancestors

The new buzz is “Genetic tracing” where you go to a  physician specializes in DNA research, those concepts are know what you are paying for.  They trace the Y chromosome + mitochondrial DNA
