The Aboriginal Culture of Australia....from Eric Powell
[powell.eric@gmail.com]

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

This past weekend the RC of Glen Innes treated me and the other Ambassadorial Scholars to a wonderful weekend away. The weekend was organized by Rotarian John "Trigger" Trigurtha and his wife Jan. Trigger arranged for us to come down and visit so we could have a glimpse into the Australian Aboriginal culture.

The Aboriginal tribes of Australia are considered to be the traditional owners of most lands in Australia. Unfortunately, today Aboriginals occupy a relatively small portion of the country and are often a marginalized group in society.

What makes the community of Glen Innes unique is not so much the number of Aboriginals there, but the degree of cultural harmony apparent between the Aboriginals and other locals. Many Aboriginals hold respected positions in Glen Innes and the city has a cultural center dedicated to Aboriginal art and history. At the local high school they teach an Aboriginal Art class and we had the chance to sit in one of these classes. We also had the opportunity to speak to several of the elders in the community and with the State park rangers who manage the historic cultural sights in the surrounding area. At every step along the way people shared stories with us and answered our questions – it really was a privileged glimpse into their culture.

I couldn't mention all the good parts about this trip and neglect to mention my host family that weekend. Each of the scholars was hosted by a different Rotarian family over that weekend. I stayed with the family of Rose and Graham Price. Besides providing a cozy place to rest they also cooked a wonderful roast dinner.

To top off the weekend, on the way home we stopped at a vineyard owned by one of Trigger's friends and were treated to a personal tour of the winery, followed by a wine-tasting and lunch.

Among other major developments, my classes this semester are now in full gear. This semester involves considerably more independent research than the previous semester. In particular, I am beginning to focus my studies more on water management. This includes an independent research project examining the recent reforms in the system of water allocations in the State of Queensland.

In Queensland, water is a very timely topic, and not just for those of use who are studying it. The State of Queensland is experiencing its longest drought in the past 100 years. The draught is placing tremendous pressure on the water supply of the metropolitan areas of Southeast Queensland. Brisbane has been under water restrictions long before I arrived in February, but now there is talk of tightening the restrictions after a winter which was drier than expected.

To add to the frenzy, the election for the State Premier was recently held. The topic of water supply dominated the election campaign and prompted candidates to make big promises in relation of ongoing issues of water management.

All of this has made me realize that although Queensland may not be receiving a lot of rainfall, it is still fertile ground to study water management…
