President Bill called on several members for announcements and updates on several projects.

Sergeant-at-Arms Azam Malik will be traveling for the months of November and December. Volunteers are needed to cover the door for these months. Contact President Bill and let him know which Tuesdays you are available to assist. It’s a Rotary Thing!

President Bill reported that he’d heard from former South Miami Rotarian Chris Morrison about the Golf Tournament and Helicopter Golf Ball Drop.

First prize is a 7 (SEVEN) day all expenses paid trip to Argentina including airfare and hotel.

Second prize is a free weekend stay at any Hyatt Regency in the state of Florida.

President Bill also addressed the problem of people not showing up with dessert or Door Prize when scheduled; particularly since the monies raised by dessert and door prizes supports much of the charitable work done by the Club. Past President Ed Fischer suggested that the bulletin editor, who maintains the rotation schedule and publicizes it in the weekly bulletin should send an E-mail or make a phone call to the members for the following week.

FOOTBALL MANIA:

John Sorgie:
gave an update on Football Mania, the second biggest fundraiser for the club after the Crafts Festival. Sunday’s winner is from a book that has yet to be turned in. Therefore, the winner cannot collect until John receives the book owner’s information and the money. So if you’re holding any Football Mania booklets, get them back to John or get a bill from the Club for the payment of the booklets….The mania sale ends today!

SOUTH MIAMI ROTARY ARTS FESTIVAL

Saturday & Sunday, February 21 – 22, 2009

Diana Phillips reminded the membership of the different sponsorship categories for our Art Show with emphasis on the new Friends of the Festival program.

To attain the “Friends of the Festival” designation requires a contribution of just $100.00 – a price that members can comfortably promote amongst their friends and contacts !

Most company managers and owners WISH they had sponsored when they see the walk-up traffic the art show brings!

Any members have relationships with local merchants? If you use a company, mention our festival. Offer them the opportunity to participate
and become a

SPONSOR!!!!!

~~ this money allows our club to offer future scholarships~~

Lynn Mitchell, Executive Director
The Wellness Community
Cancer Care

Program Chair Darrel Downs introduced Lynne Mitchell of the Wellness Community.

After five years as director for the Junior Orange Bowl Committee. Lynne, a member of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables is married to Past Rotary President David B. Mitchell. They are raising 11-year old twin boys. Lynne earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Miami and her MBA at Barry University.

Lynne showed a brief video introducing the Wellness Community whose mission is to provide a home-like atmosphere for cancer victims and their families.

Originally founded in 2004 in San Diego and focused on creating a “home-like community” for cancer victims by providing activities, including exercise and stress management programs to keep the patients active. Also emotional and social support along with educational programs especially designed to give patients hope. Internal support groups are formed amongst the patients based on the type of cancer they have.

Educational programs include updates on new medicines, procedures, research advances, as well as cooking and nutrition. Social events include dances and family programs are targeted to care givers, who also have a support group with emphasis on physical, emotional and financial planning.

The Community is a not-for-profit §501-C-3 tax-exempt organization and survives on charitable contributions and grants. There is no charge to the Cancer Victim or their families. The patients appreciate the Community because of its home-like atmosphere as compared to a sterile hospital look or the reminder of the sometimes painful and arduous medical treatment they received there.
