ROTARY  INTERNATIONAL’S MONEY???

RI general secretary addresses impact of U.S. financial crisis

Dear Rotarians,

Given the troubling news from Wall Street over the past several weeks, we have received many inquiries about the impact these events will have on Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. Although our investments have lost value in the short term, we believe they will recover when the financial markets stabilize. In addition, Rotary maintains a diversified portfolio that includes investments outside of the markets that were adversely impacted by recent events. Rotary's investment policies have proven to be sound through past down markets. This prudent management should allow our programs and projects to continue as planned.

Many Rotarians have asked specifically about our investment holdings, insurance coverage, and reserves, so I would like to note the following:

  • Both The Rotary Foundation’s and RI’s investment portfolios have only minor exposure to the companies that were taken over by the U.S. government (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and AIG), purchased by other financial institutions (Merrill Lynch and WaMu), or declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy (Lehman).
  • Although RI has some insurance coverage placed with AIG, AIG’s insurance businesses are safe in that they are separate legal entities closely regulated by both state and federal agencies.
  • Both RI and the Foundation have strong cash balances, and year-to-date revenues from sources other than investments are ahead of last year.
  • All money in the PolioPlus Fund is invested in U.S. treasuries, the safest securities available.
  • Both RI and the Foundation have adequate reserves to operate without having to sell investment securities at a loss.

Last week, The Rotary Foundation Investment Advisory Committee met with Rotary’s independent investment consultant and several money managers for its regular investment review. The committee confirmed that the current investment policies set by the RI Board and Foundation Trustees continue to be appropriate for the long term. The committee advised the Trustees to continue diversifying the portfolio to further mitigate the impact of losses in any particular market.

You can be assured that Rotary’s senior leaders, the general secretary, the Financial Services staff, and Rotary’s investment consultant are monitoring this situation very closely. We are confident our investment and reserve policies will allow the good work of Rotary to continue around the world.

Sincerely,
Ed Futa, RI General Secretary

Saturday & Sunday, February 21 – 22, 2009

Diana Phillips reminded the membership of the different sponsorship categories for our Art Show with emphasis on the new Friends of the Festival program.

To attain the “Friends of the Festival” designation requires a contribution of just $100.00 – a price that members can comfortably promote amongst their friends and contacts !

Most company managers and owners WISH they had sponsored when they see the walk-up traffic the art show brings!

Any members have relationships with local merchants? If you use a company, mention our festival. Offer them the opportunity to participate
and become a

Mission:  mother to mother support

Nuances of positioning? what is natural?

Core philosophy – most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby.

Mother and baby need to be together early and often to establish a satisfying relationship and an adequate milk supply

In the early years, the baby has an intense need to be with his mother which is as basic as his need for food.

8-12 times in a day up to 15 times in a day

nipples in hospital –

CASHE and CARRY babies – those mammals can nurse babies quickly and mothers go away due to high fat content of milk.  Human babies are carry babies with lower percentage of milk fat.

Modern behavior interferes with relationship with mother.

Breast milk is the superior infant food
For the healthy full term baby – it is the only food necessary until the baby shows the need for solids about the middle of the first year after birth.
Ideally the relationship will continue until the baby outgrows the need.

Dissolve the relationship when one of the people in the relationship no longer gets satisfaction from the connection.

Father’s role shows that other ways to accept love that doesn’t involve food.

No foods for the mother are off limits.  The mother’s digestion is transferred to the energy and production of milk.

The #1 factor in determining a mother’s success breastfeeding is her closest companion.  The #2 is her support network.

Healthy People 2010 initiative started in 1999/2000
NIH focus areas:  460 guidelines to ensure that every American moves towards a more healthy life
~75% of all mothers initiate breastfeeding
~50% still nursing for the first 6 months
~25% stil nursing at 1 year

Currently:
40% exclusively nursed htrough 3 months of age
17% exclusively nursed through 6 months of age

Mother the mother postpartum. Be her advocate.  Let her know tat mothering through breastfeeding is her sole job.  You can do the rest.

Usually 1 lactation expert per hospital.

Once you stop can you restart?Bottle nipples at the hospital are not similar to the special ones that are like human nipple.
