ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our newest member….Mr. Harry E. Barsh, Jr.

Born in South Carolina, Harry was fraternity brother to Past President Harry White. Seven years in the USAF as a fighter pilot during the Korean War led him to be a lawyer for 17 years in LA, followed by a long stint in Washington, DC. working in the energy industry. He is now semi-retired. In 2001, he reconnected with the charming Lydia White and their second wedding anniversary will be in December. We welcome this southern gentleman into our ranks!

Awwww…..

Fellow Rotarians: I am so proud of the Rotarians in this District! Last week I asked for assistance in scheduling a free eye exam for an Ambassadorial Scholar from Nigeria – within a couple of hours, I had phone calls, emails of recommendations, emails connecting people outside of Rotary. Many thanks to Brodes Hartley (RC Perrine Cutler Ridge) who made it happen and we are currently scheduling an appointment with Dr. Amofah from CHI in South Dade .

NEED TO MAKE-UP A MEETING?

Visit www.rotary6990.org

So you missed a meeting, do you know what a great opportunity this can be?

Take the opportunity to make up at another club, meet new and interesting members.

This can be a great opportunity to meet business owners who might be interested in the services that you provide and see how other clubs are growing membership!

For online make-ups:

http://www.rotary.org/newsroom/downloadcenter/pdfs/eclub_list.pdf

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity. This offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club. To earn an attendance credit, Rotarians usually log on to the Web site, read online material on a range of subjects, post comments, and submit a form to the club secretary.

Filepe Vidal
http://www.felipevidal.com/
“Husband, Father and all-around Geek” – quoted from his website!

How to Protect Your PC

Felipe Vidal likes using computers and software to help others to be able to use their technology investments effectively. He started computing in 1984 at the age of 15 when he received his first PC an IBM PC Jr. It had 128 kilobytes of RAM, a single 360 KB floppy drive and ran PC-DOS 2.1 at a screaming 4.77 megahertz.

This self-taught guru calls himself a Professional Geek. His experience runs from MS/PC-DOS v2.1 all the way through Windows XP and all points in between. He also has experience with Unix and Linux operating systems with some background with Mac OS 9/OS X as well. Since 2003, he runs a small business providing top-quality IT support to other small businesses. Find his business website at www.vitalsupport.net.

Most PC’s are not secure from when you open and take them out of the box brand new. Most software does not behave well on properly secured computers. PC’s and software are geared towards simplicity in an attempt to keep consumers from calling hardware and software tech support.

Communication on the internet is insecure and unverifiable. This is the downside price we pay to enable cheap, ubiquitous and instant communication.

Criminals have little chance of prosecution and crimes on the internet are low cost to operate. Organized crime, individual savvy thieves, foreign governments and companies, terrorist organizations (the younger members prefer the byte to the bomb) their attacks are an ongoing war.

Things that go bump in the night in your software:

SPAM - 2004 – 95% of all email was SPAM! Recently this figure is down to 64.5%

PHARMING

ROGUEWARE

MALWARE

WORMS

VIRUSES

SPYWARE

KEYLOGGERS

BOTS AND ZOMBIES – keeping hidden files on your computer enabling a remote user to control it for flooding emails, pinging companies websites until they are overloaded…

PHISHING

SOCIAL ENGINEERING – weakest link is human – such as planting devices that promote curiosity.

TROJAN HORSES – stand alone programs that masquerade as something legitimate.

ADVICE: Set your computer to have you as a limited user – not the administrator. There will be less damage from problems you allow in by a wrong click.

I could easily define all of the terms above – but Google them. You’ll learn an important lesson in protecting yourself and your valuable information – ed.

Felipe will return and give us safeguards to fight the virus', worms, bots and all the other threats to our PCs.
