Understanding and Intrepreting Commerical and

Political Surveys and Polls

Bendixen and Associates is a full-service public opinion research,
management, and communications consulting firm based in Miami, Florida. Founded in 1984, the firm has grown from a company with roots in political campaigns and polling into an international consulting company that incorporates many disciplines and sectors.

Their work includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • General Research – Polling, focus groups, executive interviews
  • Corporate Consulting – Hispanic marketing
  • Political Consulting – Strategy, research, communications
  • Multilingual/Multicultural Research – USA, Latin America, Europe, Asia
  • Public Affairs Consulting – Media relations, issue research, strategic
    communications
  • Production of Spanish-Language Media – TV, radio, print
Rotary impacted Fernand’s life.  He was able to attend a field trip to Clinton’s inaugeration because a Rotary Club sponsored him.

The 2008 Presidential Election is just under 30 days away.  It may be the most historic and important election in history.  The fight is for the undecided vote or those who can be swayed.

Today Obama has a 6 point lead over McCain.

The Obama Message for their election strategy is about deciding a new direction for America on crucial issues like econimoic policy, the iraq war, national health insurance, and public education.

Do you support of oppose the Iraq war?  Support 36% / Oppose %61

Who do you trust more to handle the economy?
Obama 54% / McCain 35%

The information from polling Inserts itself into the communication strategy of each campaign.

Do you support or oppose raising taxes for national health care coverage?
Support 66% / Oppose 30%
Which party could do a better job?

Democrat 55% / Republican 34%

Polling suggested on what to focus and what to draw contrasts from.

The McCain’s campaign message:  decide which presidential candidate has the experience, the character, the patriotism and the independence necessary to lead the US

Who has the right experience to be president?
McCain 61% / Obama 29%

Talks to the area in which the American public is has stated in polls that they are open to and in which they have made up their minds, make that your message

Who do you think would be a better commander in chief?

McCain 69% / Obama 24%

Go to where you have a legitimate claim create an impression to sway undecided voters.

Do you think McCain’s / Obama’s patriotism strong or do you have questions about how patriotic he is?
McCain 84% / 9%
Obama 55% /35%

McCain’s lead slogan:  Country First &  A Nation of Courage
The American President Americans have been waiting for.

Game changing event happened in the last two weeks – found himself in a deficit. Then the banking bailout – an economic meltdown of banks that were 100’s of years old.  Stock market dropped 800 in one day.  American’s felt this directly in their pocket.  Democrats have the advantage on issues so it favors Obama.

On a local issue:

Miami Herald – Urban Development Boundary unilaterally move by the County Commission without asking the public.  9 member planning Advisory Board recommended to the BCC to vote yes.

March 2006:  Poll of 500 people in 3 languages offering language of choice.
Should the UDB line be extended or not?
75% no – and then 71% after hearing the reasons why to move it.

BCC dropped the issue after realizing the polling results.

$25,000 polling study:
Public had a tremendous resistance to how the $ should be spent:
Marlins Stadium
Tunnel under Port of Miami
Performing Arts Center
Museum Park

Public interviewed showed 66% priority of how money should be spent:
Funding reconstruction of public schools

Too much public apathy due to lack of opportunities to voice their opinions.

People don’t vote who on the bottom of the ticket but who’s on the top.  Dan Quail was the example.
