October is Vocational Service Month

Every October, Rotarians are encouraged to focus their attention on vocational service. Discussions among Clubs and Districts on vocational service can lead to projects that not only develop the ethical consciousness and vocational skills of Rotarians but also the talents within their communities. Vocational service month is an opportunity to begin yearlong vocational service activities, ranging from Rotary discussions to awards to community projects.

Cycling to Servemembers Terry Long, Debbie Swain and Vice President of Cycling to Serve US/Canada, Dr. Patricia Pardiñas, kicked off the service calendar year in excellent Rotary spirits.   Our South Florida Fellowship began service to the community with a wonderful project held at Matheson Hammock Beach this past Saturday September 15th.

Terry, Debbie and Patricia gave their support to Coastal Clean Up, a Water Conservancy project sponsored by Coral Gables Rotary, during Saturday morning’s wee hours.  All members, Rotarians and community volunteers alike, went to clean up the adjacent beach areas from debris strewn by careless boaters and beach-going crowds.  It was a wonderful-if “steamy” day and we got a lot done.

We were very glad to also have the support of High School students from various Interact Clubs.  They were in full attendance and did a great job as well.

Road-Wheels were on the rest of the day as we bid good bye to Coastal Clean Up members and cycled from Matheson Hammock to Deering Estate and back for our regular 32 mile ride in gorgeous Florida weather.

Best,
Dr. Patricia Pardinas, Coral Gables Rotary Club

Cycling To Serve in Italy
Cycling enthusiasts around Europe participated in the 23rd An nu a l R o t a r y Wor l d Championship, held 7-9 September in Mottarone, Italy. Organized by Rotary clubs t h r o ughout Europe, the championship is held every year in a different European country, attracting up to 300 Rotarian racers competing in four age classes. The entrance fees are distributed as prize money to the winners, who use the funds to support their Rotary club’s community projects. The first Rotary World Cycling Championship was organized in 1984 by the Rotary Club of Herentals in Belgium as a fund-raiser. After three years, Belgian and Dutch race participants came together to establish the International Cycling to Serve Fellowship to allows Rotarians to share their cycling passion and demonstrate their non-professional talents in different locations. Since then the championship has taken place in France, England, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey and this year for the second time in Italy. Can Coral Gables be far behind??? Rev. Ronald Brummitt, President (and husband)

Roy Gonas introduced…

Marilyn Brummitt, Director of Community Development Miami Rescue Mission Inc., She was a successful businesswoman running two retail stores, a financial planning CFP, ran estate planning seminars, and now she is an
Ambassador to tell the story of what I love to do…

She had two children and her first husband died and left her in a depression.  She didn’t care about life, had no passion.  She went through the  grief and placed her interests in different arenas.  First as a church director and then used her previous experiences as a counselor of financial planning.  She trained people to give a hand up not a hand out.  Five and one half years ago, met and married President of Miami Rescue Mission.

Her first job with the mission was as a Volunteer coordinator for three sites, Miami, Hollywood and Pompano.  Just one campus has 2,000 volunteers.

Her second job was as a  newsletter editor

Her current position is all about relationships.  She wants to tell the story of an organization full of successes and one of the best kept secrets in Dade County.  Started in 1922, it was founded by husband and wife who worked for the telephone company and they cooked meals and served those on the street.

Miami has eight buildings in a two block area.  240 men live in 4 story buildings
Ten years ago Broward asked the Mission to open in Hollywood (Scotts St) to help with their tent city
Five years ago Pompono asked for assistance  and they have the first Family center – mom, dad and children can live together

Miami Dade County survey – homeless demographics typically men but changed to women with children – at the time of the survey there were 85 living in cars, parks, or under a bridge.

The Rescue Mission deals with over 1,000 clients per day, which make them the largest provider for the homeless.

22 just graduated the Mission’s  goal oriented program in Miami on Sunday – success was proven with education 2 hours of school each day.   Graduating at a 9th grade level.   They learn  how to be accountable and how to represent themselves – in business suits.

Each client is accessed upon entry 85-90% of those in the program suffer from alcohol and drug abuse. Abusers have damaged their neurotransmitters which can recover with a memory therapy program to help them learn again.

The Rescue Mission is networked with other facilities but they will provide an emergency shelter, including a meal, a shower, clean clothing – for those who don’t want the rest of their program

Programs include:  nutrition, anger mgt, finance – tailored to women’s needs

Opened in 2001, the Youth center – reaches out into the inner city with a huge gym full day of after-school and summer programs and homework help.

Sleepathon – to make a statement to show what the homeless do every night.  County wants to end the homelessness in 10 years.

Pain comes in many different packages – but it’s still pain
This is a faith-based mission which teaches that God has a plan for every single person and to give your past a rest and learn something new each day and allow the change and opportunities to happen.
The poor you will have with them always – biblical quote

Ray Santos, Affordable Housing Director, Miami Rescue Mission, since July 2007

The Mission is purchasing an apartment building and closing in a month or so.  The average efficiency in Miami-Dade County is $800/monnth or 2 bedroom $12-1500 month.  There’s no where for the graduates of the program to live. The mission must step up to find decent accommodations.
