New Group of Youth Exchange Students Arrive

RYLA: Training Future Rotary Leaders on Pigeon Key

A new group of 12 in-bound youth exchange students have arrived to experience the culture of District 6990 while attending high school and living with host families. Make an effort to welcome the students and contribute to enriching their experience during their stay.

This year’s group includes: Aneta from the Czech Republic, hosted by Coral Spring-Parkland; Arnaud from Belgium, hosted by Deerfield Beach; Bellina from Taiwan, hosted by Miami Sundown; Gabriel from Brazil, hosted by Freeport (Bahamas); Kwan from Thailand, hosted by Key West; Madeline from Sweden, hosted by Fort Lauderdale; Marie-Claire from France, hosted by Miramar-Pines; Marco from Italy, hosted by Coral Springs; Sanne from Denmark, hosted by Pompano Beach; Sena from Turkey, hosted by Hallandale Beach-Aventura; Tim from Germany, hosted by Weston; Vilius from Lithuania, hosted by Davie-Cooper City.

Thirty high school leaders came to historic Pigeon Key, near Marathon, for an intense program of leadership, training and fun activities. This Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program is designed to help the current generation of youth leaders refine their skills, knowledge and perspectives.

Participants took part in goal setting, individual profiling and team building – all expertly led by our own DGN, Todd Dayton and fellow Rotarian Tom Pratt. The students also learned mediation techniques by engaging in role-playing exercises led by UM Law Professor Richard Williamson.

They were fortunate to have two former Rotary Youth Exchange students also attending, who spoke about their experiences overseas. Ellen Blasi, who walked the 2.2 miles over the old bridge, talked to the students about Rotaract and how to get involved in a club when they go to college.

The students also had a chance to engage in hands-on discovery of sea life in the Key’s marine laboratory, to learn how to snorkel and explore shallow waters around the Key.

The program received rave reviews from the participants. Kudos to all the Rotarians and family who assisted: Ana Blanco, Betty Blanco, Michelle Hernandez and Ryan Williamson.

MetroZoo Celebrates as New District 6990 Club

The Rotary Club of Perrine–Cutler Ridge/Palmetto Bay and the Rotary Club of Miami-Dadeland-Pinecrest cosponsored the formation of a new Rotary Club at Miami MetroZoo.

Bill Tuttle, a Past President of the Rotary Club of Miami-Dadeland-Pinecrest, and an employee of Miami MetroZoo, is organizing the new club. “I want to replicate all the good that other Rotary Clubs have done, but here in the community near MetroZoo and the Kendall area. There is not a more exciting place to meet and join up with other business professionals to do some good in the community,” Bill said.

Golf Ball Drop Fundraiser for

Bill Gates Polio Plus Grant Challenge

Biltmore Golf Course, Coral Gables

http://www.faqs.org/photo-dict/photofiles/list/470/850golf_ball.jpg

1st Prize – Courtesy of Diana Saiz, Rotary Club of Miami Airport – a one week stay, for up to 10 people, in her vacation rental home in Asheville , North Carolina .

2nd Prize – Courtesy of J. Guarch, Rotary Club of Coral Gables – a three night stay in his 2 bedroom, 2 bath waterfront condo in Ocean Reef, Florida , with dockage and use of a golf cart.

3rd Prize – Obtained by Yoli Woodbridge, Rotary Club of Coral Gables – Sunday Brunch for four, valued at $300.00, at the Fontana Restaurant at The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables , Florida .

Those who have already sold one, two or more Gates Challenge Helicopter Golf Ball raffle tickets to eradicate polio, without knowledge of the specific prizes to be offered, are to be commended for a job well done.  And, for those who have been waiting for the announcement of the prizes to sell their tickets, your wait is over!

 $25 donation each ticket

Contact Chris Morrison, 305-582-7690 / morrisonclan@att.net

If everyone of us sells two tickets, this can raise $105,000.

WE CAN DO THIS!!

This fundraiser is a top priority!  We need to sell tickets to meet the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. They donated $355 million in the last two years. Of that amount $200 million is a matching grant for polio eradication.  Our district is expected to donate $300,000.

We have raised $195,000 towards this goal to date. The balance is $105,000 yet to be raised.  If the 2,100 district’s club members can all sell just 2 tickets this year at $25 per ticket, we’d sell 4,200 tickets.

DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘CAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

1.  Read a variety of current articles in the programs section and/or choose articles from the Archived Programs list and/or information from the Avenues of Service pages. You will be required to answer questions. There is space on the makeup request form for up to three articles to be reviewed, however you will need to read more than three to meet your 30 minute visit obligation.

2.  At the end of your 30 minute visit, click on Make-up Request Form from the drop-down menu at the top of the page OR the bottom of each make-up program.

3.  Read the Makeup Request Form carefully, and follow instructions. The form will appear once you press the SUBMIT button (one time only) and an email copy will be sent to the email address you proved. This can be forwarded to your club secretary so your attendance records are properly updated.

Rotarians can also designate eClub One as their home club.

Members in eClub One are usually experienced Rotarians who are unable to belong to a traditional club because they reside in a remote location or they are engaged in a demanding travel schedule. Those applying for membership in eClub One must provide an endorsement from their current District Governor, current Rotary club President, along with letters of reference from two Rotarian colleagues of their current club..

eClub One has standard requirements for memberships, including charges for dues and administrative fees. Participants also must be willing to take part regularly in the Rotary eClub One community by taking on tasks and responsibilities. Members are required to also have regular access to the Internet and be willing to acquire the necessary skills to participate in the activities of Rotary eClub One.

Rotary and eClub One are on the cutting edge of the technology age. How this evolves will only be determined by periodic evaluation and the involvement of its members. For today, however, it is an outstanding tool for Rotarians to makeup missed meetings and keep in touch with Rotary happenings throughout the world.

For make-ups anywhere around the world when traveling internationally: http://rotary.org/support/clubs/index.html

Assistant District Governor Ellen Book introduced today’s speaker:

Rotary District 6990 Governor

Lee Phares

leephares@earthlink.net

GOALS:

Every club should strive to receive a Presidential citation.  It is given to a Rotary Club by the RI President if the following criteria is met by March 31, 2010.

1-    Net increase of 1 member by March 31, 2010

2-    Complete three activities that fit in the Rotary International strategic plan – the road map of where Rotary International is heading over a 3-year period

 7 Priorities:

1)  Eradicate polio - #1 goal from 1985 350,000 case each year.  Only four countries with less than 1,000 cases each year Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Nigeria.

Last year’s golf ball drop was supposed to raise $48,000 as a district.  It didn’t.  It actually raised $150,000!

The one fundraiser met a three year goal for ALL 6990 clubs in just one year! So the district 6990 met its obligation towards funding the Gates challenge.

UNTIL…at this year’s San Diego conference of DG’s, Bill Gates arrived.  He walked out on stage wearing a baseball cap that said “End Polio Now.”  He believes in the cause so much that he announced he was  giving $100,000,000 and then offered a second $150,000 ,000 challenge grant.  However, this meant another assessment $1000 per club for three years and thus the upcoming golf ball drop ($25 per ticket) in November.

Noelle Galperin led a Zone 34 NID – National Immunization Day in India in Feb 2009 and will reoccur in February 2010.

 2)  Public image of Rotary –

~Rotary 6990’s phone number is #305-860-8060

~All calls are answered within 24 hours

~Lee has written a Billboards publicity grants from RI

~Moving banner – generic projects

~District newsletter – sharing what activities and projects that the clubs do

3)  Increasing the Rotary capacity to provide service

4)  Water and Sanitation, Health and Hunger, Literacy

5) Expand Rotary in numbers and quality of Rotarians – one net number by 3/31/10! This is important for attaining the Presidential citation

6) Football Game Dolphins partnership Sunday 11/15/09 Tampa Bay vs Dolphins game! Thomas Eugene in Rotary Club of Miami end zone seats for $45.  Tail gate party is SOLD OUT!

District leadership camp was at the Dolphins Training Camp

Miami Heat – Saturday, 3:30 p.m. February 27, 2010 Rotary game

November 6-7-8 District Conference – is a little bit of Rotary and a WHOLE LOT of FUN! Which includes a Rotarian Idol talent show on Saturday night, 11/7/09

7) Classifications – Bill Tuttle, our past ADG, set up a Metro Zoo club.  Just this last week they are on their way to being chartered and they are now provisional.

In the entire world of over 33,000 Rotary clubs, no other clubs meet in a zoo.  They are chartered with 26 members.  Wednesdays at noon.

Another new start will be Brickell Avenue breakfast Rotary Club 7:30 – 8:30am Tuesday mornings. Ellen Blasi is the point person.

Unique vocational service commitment – 4 way test!  Ethics in today’s business world

Networking was not promoted in the past.  Clients from the Business to Business pamphlet – see Donna Gaines and Felipe Vidal’s  listings

Rotary Leadership Institute – 3 part program $95 per day.  February and then May.  At American University in Weston.

Continuity Succession Plan

Doug Maymon – District Governor 2010-11

Todd Dayton – District Governor 2011-12

Soon to be nominated – District Governor 2012-13 (see last week’s newsletter for more info)

No  leader in Rotary International is involved in the club’s fundraisers, they cannot demonstrate code of ethics in your workplace, they do not demand what service projects we support.  The future of Rotary is in your hands!  We direct the future of Rotary.
