Coral Gables Rotarians Lend a Hand at Cutler Bay Cycling Event

Coral Gables Rotarians Terry Long, and Dr. Patricia Pardiñas were invited by the City of Cutler Bay as consultants in planning a city wide route for the City’s very first family bicycling event modeled after Coral Gables’ very own police escorted Family Cycling Celebration sponsored by Rotary International Cycling to Serve Fellowship held the first Sunday of the month beginning November 2007.

The City of Cutler Bay held its third meeting with community leaders, residents, and cycling advisory members of Cutler Bay and Coral Gables on September 11th, 2007 to finalize plans for the city’s first sponsored police escorted family bike ride celebration.  City Commissioner, Peggy Bell and Police Chief Captain Richard Pichardo along with community cycling advocate Marshal Steingold, Rotarians Terry Long and Dr. Patricia Pardiñas, National Chair for Rotary International’s Cycling to Serve Fellowship(USA-Canada) , met to finalize routes, educational workshops and safe-harbor stops for participating members.  The Cutler Bay community ride is planned for the first Saturday in November and it promises to be a wonderful venue for families and children of all ages.  As is the focus of the City of Coral Gables’ intergenerational family ride, sponsored by Rotary’s Cycling to Serve Fellowship, Commissioner Bell’s efforts will also focus on safety and road-wise education.  Cutler Bay’s family bike ride will be police escorted by Cutler Bay finest with police officers Gigi Ortiz and Debbie Fleites leading Bike Corps, while motorcycle and squad vehicles will also be available.  The family bike ride is free of charge to riders, open to all, and encourages riders of all ages to be prepared for the rules of the road prior to arriving at the take-off point, making the focus of the event education, safety and fun for all.

Programming Chair Roy Gonas introduced

Myrtle Alexander, Founder

A Lift For Life Inc.

305-446-4191 / MyrtlePAlexander@aol.com

Myrtle is the Executive Director of the British American Chamber of Commerce

Her organization is giving the at-risk children “A Lift in Life.”  J.R.E. Lee Opportunity School accepts students who have faced expulsion from other schools for conduct violations and gives them a second chance.

It is a way to tell them, “Listen, you’re not forgotten, there are people who care about you and your future.”

The partnership with JRE Lee began in 1995.  Life in Life’s purpose was to boost morale and offer hope..  Originally the alternative school was supposed to educate the troubled student for a nine- week period but now some stay until high school.

The first project focused on raising the spirits of JRE Lee students and faculty fundraised $10,000 and had participation from the South Miami Police, athletes, offered dunk tanks and the children loved it.  From this day of activities, a foundation was started,

Those attending the Academic Academy have no exposure to a good home environment.  Life for Life offers career days to present business people from all walks of life.  Businesswomen are especially welcomed to these events.

They are currently working with Dwayne Wade’s foundation – a sports program called Pro Pops which centers on healthy father daughter / father son relationships.

If you volunteer, the JRE Lee kids are very vocal and will engage you.  There is a split of the genders which allow the children the freedom to express themselves more openly.

Beginning in 2007, the alternative schools can be attended from middle school through high school – which makes the foundation have to focus on
graduation.
