Nice News from Diana:

I am pleased to announce that Patricia Pardinas (Coral Gables Rotarian) likes us well enough to volunteer for the South Miami Rotary Art Festival. We like her well enough to accept. She will be in charge of music for the event.

FROM DOWN UNDER:

G'day Rotarians and mates,

Just thought I'd drop you a line to say hello. We're just coming into summer here in Brisbane and the weather is great – perfect for BBQ's, two of which are already on the schedule, but more to come about that.

From the emails I've sent of over the past 7-8 months you can probably tell that us Ambassadorial Scholars have been forming a cohesive group, and at this stage I'd say we are functioning like a well-oiled machine.

As (almost) veteran ambassadorial scholars we have now begun to spread the word and publicize the Ambassadorial Scholar program to others. Five of us recently gave a presentation at a local Rotary club (RC Ashgrove/The Gap) about the Ambassadorial Scholarship program and the unique experiences we have had as Ambassadors in Australia. Everyone really enjoyed our presentation and afterwards we were approached with an offer for our next "gig". This time we'll be presenting at the annual Rotary Foundation Seminar. Lots of other Rotary programs and activities will be showcased that afternoon and we have been asked to represent the Ambassadorial Scholar program.

A second avenue we have pursued is publicizing the scholarship among the university community. We got the idea a month or two ago when we hosted a booth at the university's Open Day for prospective students. (I've attached a picture of this so you can see the display setup). Most recently, we booked a presentation room in the library and hosted an information session about Rotary scholarships and opportunities. The turnout was marginal, but of those who did attend, there was some genuine interest and we have put them in contact with local Rotarians.

Next week we'll be holding a BBQ to raise money for polio. We held a similar event several weeks ago, except it was a pancake breakfast. In both cases, the money to purchase the food has come from one of our host clubs. We are hoping for a good turn out - after all, the weather couldn't be better.

As for the second BBQ, this comes at the generosity of Rob Jeffery, the sub-committee chair of Scholarships here in District 9600. He invited all of the Ambassadorial Scholars for a BBQ at his house. All of us (that were available) have eagerly accepted his invitation. The BBQ is scheduled in two weeks and will probably be one of the last times that we all get together as a group.

I have one last piece of important information which concerns one of my fellow Ambassadorial Scholars, Clare Wood. She is involved in a terrific program to help disadvantaged children and provide them with a completely unique and amazing experience. They are really in sorely in need of some assistance in the Miami area during two weeks of November. I've forwarded a second email to you which tells all the details, if anyone could give them a hand that would be fantastic.

Best until next time,

Eric

SAFE STREETS HALLOWEEN

Tuesday, 4 PM – 6 PM on Sunset Drive
between US1 and Red Road.

For Safestreets Halloween, the street closes at 3:45pm and the event is 4-6pm. If Rotarians could be there no later than 3:45pm, they should spread out to the various different avenues and courts between US1 and Red Road. For ID purposes, I would think the white Rotary shirts would be best. If anyone needs one, let Mike Mills know.

NEED TO MAKE-UP A MEETING?

Visit www.rotary6990.org
So you missed a meeting, do you know what a great opportunity this can be?

Take the opportunity to make up at another club, meet new and interesting members.

This can be a great opportunity to meet business owners who might be interested in the services that you provide and see how other clubs are growing membership!
For online make-ups:

http://www.rotary.org/newsroom/downloadcenter/pdfs/eclub_list.pdf

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity. This offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club. To earn an attendance credit, Rotarians usually log on to the Web site, read online material on a range of subjects, post comments, and submit a form to the club secretary.

How to Protect Your PC and Surf Safely

See our newsletter dated Tuesday, October 3, 2006 for part 1

Most computer owners set up their computer and allow all of the pre-packaged software to run as they need to use it. A wizard opens each software and sets it up. At “Administrator” level, you have total control to download and launch executable files.

To be safe, you should set up a “user” with a “limited” access. This will allow you to do approximately 70% of surfing but zero downloading. Especially downloading of mal-ware (malicious software) and ad-ware (advertising and cookies.)
