Registration Deadline: October 27, 2008

As you know, the Gates Challenge Helicopter Golf Ball Drop will take place at 1:30 pm Friday, October 31, at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables. What you might not know is that the drop will take place at the conclusion of the 5th Annual Rotary Golf Classic. Just think what fun it would be for golfing Rotarians to play golf at the newly renovated Biltmore Golf Course and witness our Districts major media event, The Gates Challenge Helicopter Golf Ball Drop!

And did you know that all RI District 6990 Rotary Clubs can share in the proceeds from the golf tournament? That's right; each participating club will receive the same percentage of the net proceeds as they contribute to the gross income of the tournament! Over the last three years Rotary Clubs from Miami, Homestead, Bal Harbour and Coral Gables have received tournament checks for their charitable funds or favorite charities. Now, that's what you call a win-win.

A file has been attached of the brochure for the 5th Annual Rotary Golf Classic, the tournament designed to raise moneys for all participating District Rotary Clubs and to promote fellowship among golfing Rotarians. If you wish to play, please fill out the registration panel of the brochure with your credit card information and fax it to (305) 255-3532. Please note other sponsorship opportunities are listed on the brochure which all count as contributions to be credited to participating clubs.

What better way to spend Halloween? Costumes not required.

Yours in Rotary Service,

CHRIS Morrison

FOUNDATION CORNER …

Dear District Foundation Leaders  D 6930, D 6980, D 6990

News from TRF Evanston:

The provisions of the Economic Stabilzation Act recently passed and signed by the President, has extended the provisions of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 for IRA distributions in tax years 2008 and 2009.  This means that gifts made to The Rotary Foundation (or to any qualified charity) can be made by an individual directly from their IRA or Roth IRA without incurring Federal Income Tax for the withdrawal.  The limit is $100,000 and the giver must be 701/2 or older to qualify for this tax exemption.  The gift must go directly from the IRA account to the charity to qualify.

This Act, before it expired on December 31, 2007, resulted $2.2 mIllion in giving to TRF in just 15 months. This can be an incentive tool to use for the PolioCampaign and gifts to the Annual or Permanent Funds.

With the end of this tax year approaching and the current uncertainty of the stock market, older Rotarians who qualify - and we have many in our Zone - may be interested in this possibility.

Marty Rosen introduced:

Kirby Hocutt, Athletic Director

University of Miami

From the UM website:
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Kirby Hocutt has been named the new Director of Athletics at the University of Miami. The 36-year-old Hocutt has been the athletic director at Ohio University since June, 2005. Prior to that he had been at the University of Oklahoma for the previous six years, serving most recently as associate athletics director for external operations and sports administration.

“Kirby Hocutt is a proven leader, with the enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and commitment to our quest to be the top program in the country,” said University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala.

A former star linebacker at Kansas State, Hocutt has a total of 17 years experience in intercollegiate athletics, including five as a student-athlete. He replaces Paul Dee who is retiring after being the Director of Athletics for the past 16 years.  Hocutt will officially begin his duties at UM on June 1, 2008.

“My family and I are extremely excited to be coming to the University of Miami and joining the South Florida community,” said Hocutt. “To be associated with a world-class University known for comprehensive excellence is truly an amazing opportunity. I look forward to working for and with President Shalala, our student-athletes, coaches and staff as we focus on permanently establishing the Miami Hurricanes as the premier athletics program in the nation.”

Joe Natoli, Miami’s senior vice president/business and finance and chief financial officer, who chaired the search committee, said, “Our search, which included ADs and senior associates at some of the top programs in the country, led us to Kirby Hocutt, a rising star in intercollegiate athletics.”

At Ohio, Hocutt significantly reorganized the athletic department’s annual giving program, increasing fundraising by more than 75 percent, including the securing of the second largest major gift in school athletics history. He also increased season ticket sales in football by 112 percent and in men’s basketball by 50 percent. He developed a comprehensive plan to improve the facilities for the football stadium and the press box, as well as the Convocation Center which houses all administrative and coaches’ offices.

In his three years at Ohio, the school won 11 team championships and four head coaches were recognized as conference Coaches of the Year. In 2006, the football team played in its first bowl game in 38 years.

At Oklahoma, Hocutt was the primary administrator for football and the sport supervisor for baseball, men’s and women’s golf, as well as men’s and women’s tennis. His duties included supervision of the athletics development office, athletics ticket office, special events, stadium suite program, athletics endowment program, letter winners association and the department’s facility use and rental program.

Hocutt led Oklahoma’s athletics fundraising to an all-time high in annual giving and capital campaigns. From 1998 to 2005, Oklahoma's annual giving increased from $3.4 million to more than $17 million. That 400 percent increase in annual giving was one of the highest percentage increases in intercollegiate athletics history.

Beginning in 1999, Hocutt served in a leadership position in the strategic planning for a $100 million capital campaign. The $120 million campaign was unique in that it focused on facility construction or improvements for each of Oklahoma's 20 sports.

Prior to joining the Oklahoma staff, Hocutt served as the assistant director of licensing at the NCAA. In that position, he worked with corporate partners and licensees to create new revenue producing initiatives to support and promote all 81 NCAA championships.

He began his career in sports administration as the assistant director of marketing and promotions at Kansas State University. While at Kansas State, he implemented revenue-producing activities for the athletics department, including corporate partner sponsorships and ticket sales.

A former student-athlete at Kansas State, Hocutt was a four-year letterman as a linebacker while leading the Big 8 Conference in tackles and being named to the All-Big 8 Conference team during his junior season.  In 1993, The Sporting News selected him as one of the top 20 underrated players in the nation.  Hocutt served as a team captain his senior season.  Two of Hocutt’s coaches at Kansas State were Bob Stoops, head football coach at Oklahoma and Jim Leavitt, the head football coach at South Florida.

Hocutt earned his bachelor’s degree from Kansas State in 1995 and his master’s of education degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2001. He and his wife, Diane, have two sons: 5-year-old Drew and 3-year-old Brooks.

UM has more tradition and some of the most passionate fans in intercollegiate athletics.  The under-graduate enrollment is under 10,000.  However, UM has one of the most powerful athletics departments in the country

President Donna Shalala is as competitive and driven an individual who understands the role of athletics in higher education.  She makes a promise to have the participants consider themselves students first and athletes second with both goals creating the very best person.

At his first meeting on campus interview, Pres. Shalala was late to the meeting.  At 42 she greeted him with You played college football as a linebacker?  Youre too small!

NUMBERS:

6.5 billion people live on the planet.

304 million people live in the USA.

Of those, 80 million attend 100,000 schools in the country.  4,025 are enrolled in schools offering degrees,

18 million are attending universities and colleges.

380,000 participate in athletics at the intercollegiate level

and

357 extremely talented young adults participate at UM

At the University we work together as a team.  But were only successful as each other, and we NEED your support to become the very best.  Buy tickets!  Help us get the message out about the great academic successes.

Lessons learned in competition prepare students for the rest of their lives.   Discipline, commitment to excellence which they need to succeed in their professions.

We rank 8th academic ranking for athletes n the USA. Not in the playing field though we are getting there.

13 of 23 seniors already have their degrees and have graduated.  UM graduated more athletes in division 1.

The Head Coach of UM’s Basketball Program can boast that 100% of young men have graduated after exhausting their eligibility at UM.  UM’s Basketball team has more all ACC academic selections then any in the Atlantic Coast conference.

Overall 86% of UM athletes have graduated after exhausting their UM eligibility.

Competitively:

Hurricanes are much more than a local team. We have national recognition. All of the athletes are in the national spotlight when they perform.  ESPN cares so much about UM that on the front page of their website they monitor the UM running backs current physical condition.

UM has higher standards, socially, academically, athletically, volunteering

Our university offers a legacy of all Americans.  The recent UM versus UF games was the 3rd most watched football game in history.  When rating the top 3 most watched games on ESPN, all are games in which UM has played.

Our students bleed orange and green. We promise to bring class and distinction to the community.

Our current and future goals is the desire to upgrade the athletic facilities.

Michael Jordon said in a post game individuals win games but teams win championships.

This year there is a special chemistry and positive feelings amongst the basketball team. The basketball tip off is in less than 2 weeks.
