Cycling to Serve Fellowship

The Rotary Club of Coral Gables’ Cycling to Serve Fellowship kicks off its civic engagement calendar this coming November 4th, Sunday at 10 am.  As in the past year, we will need the two motorcycle officers (Perez and Cachinero if possible) to escort our group of youngsters and their family.  We are expecting a similar number group (25 to 30 riders) and coverage will be done by the Miami Herald and it runs on PR over the coming two weeks.

We have scheduled four rides for this year’s civic engagement calendar:

1.    November 4th (Fall Celebration Ride),
2.    December 1st (Family Holiday Ride)
3.    February 12th    (Valentine’s Day Ride)
4.    April 6th (Spring Celebration Ride).

The mission of Rotary’s Cycling to Serve Fellowship is to teach by example safety and positive rules of engagement while on the road for all cyclist, the duties and responsibilities of each rider, respect for law enforcement and the mission they support, and to afford a friendly gathering of families celebrating the Coral Gables community.

The Town of Cutler Bay also has a similar ride on Saturday, November 3rd, and the City of Miami Beach has theirs the following Saturday November 10th.

The Coral Gables riding group assembles by Ponce Middle School in the service road paralleling Dixie Hwy.  Our route follows the existing mapped out executed by the officers listed last season; they are familiar and experienced in this event.

Roy Gonas, Programming Chair, thanked Bob Straile for his planning October’s speaker’s schedules.  He then introduced…

Julia Yarbough, Anchor

NBC 6 News

http://www.nbc6.net/index.html

Julia’s blog

http://www.nbc6.net/juliastake/index.html

Julia is a native of Fairfield, CA and a graduate of the University of CA in Santa Barbara.  She started in television in Richmond, VA.  She is currently the co-anchor on the 6pm news on NBC-6 with Tony Seggretto.

In her work, she is committed to be fair and honest and models the Rotary 4-way test.

Her career will have spanned 20 years in April of 2008.  It is a quickly changing career in which she has moved to many locations and stations and encountered varieties of news and stories styles.

The last five to ten years, the medias’ technology has changed the fastest. Julia’s forte is that she is a storyteller for all those she crosses paths with.  However, the business of news gathering is in a struggle due to the rapid progress in the digital age.

In the past, the industry shoot footage on video tape (after film) but now it’s digital for small lighter cameras. Then the information is transferred via wireless feedback to the station.

In the past, there was three-to four hours to work on one story. Now there is less time to work on each story as news starts to break.  The demanding job requiring accuracy, coverage of all sides of the issue, and the ability to condense the information to 1 minute and 15 seconds while being valid and compelling.

Much more is expected of everyone in the industry while keeping the same high ethical and competitive standards – to be first on the story, getting all parts of it, accuracy, meaningfulness

Anchors, reporters, editors all genuinely care about the stories and the people they are gathering info. but all are under severe time pressures.

We are at a critical point as to how technology is changing all fields.  Obsolescence is rapid that news producers are being hired young, in their early 20’s and right out of college.

ADVICE:  Force yourself to learn, embrace this inter-connective universe to be more productive and efficient.

One future additional task she’ll be facing is digital editing.  In a few years she’ll be independently shooting writing, editing the whole story.

When her industry realized they were losing market shore – they changed.  What they put on the television is now on the computer.  Any story you see on the news, was in a print version on the website, and is now a streaming video version.

The news needs to be available in a format to find it when you find the time.

For accuracy, and a full understanding of an issue, it’s up to the person to dig deeper into the internet to get any in depth information.   Go online to read magazine and newspaper articles for more content.  Television news tends to be the filler between the advertising.

The demographics of news have changed, and the news changes to meet the current demographic.  Unlike the news – Youtube.com is flooded with partial truths

There is a huge amount of information on the internet but it is not knowledge.  To compete in a technology industry, find people who are younger and more compartmentalized and specialized.  Linking with these types of specialists allows the freelance economy to function and keeps one person able to advance without keeping up with every change flooding the marketplace.
