TAKE
STOCK IN CHILDREN:

Diana:
Cathy Miller (cathy@firstflorida.com) has agreed to take charge of our scholarship
program in which we partner with Take Stock in Children.
She has been provided with the TSIC manual, some guidelines, and
anything else I thought might help.
Cathy has the three applications that were approved in October
through TSIC and will be making arrangements shortly for a Rotary panel of
judges, as well as for future activities.
If you are asked to serve as a judge, say yes, (or
volunteer first!) This is ALWAYS an interesting and enjoyable
experience.
Craft
Talk with Lakitsia Gaines

First priority in life is my family.
I have a beautiful supportive family, a five year old daughter and son
named Kendall who plays football in a championship game.
On Monday, her agency ranked 88th out of 18,000 in the country for State Farm
agents.
She takes pride in the care and help she provides others who need to deal
with risk. She helps boat owners, home owners, car owners.
Everytime you pay your premium, you choose your company. We
appreciate your business and want you to know about your policy.
Whenever you buy a new car, it is covered for 14 days at no extra cost to
your premium.
Whenever you have a relative or another permissive driver, State Farm covers
them.
At the last talk on 1/26/09, we were looking for rate adequacy. Then many
of the policy holders in North and Central FL switched to other
companies. That was good for the company who had too much risk with
too many customers. This reduced their exposure.
Discounts will change. However, State Farm is the only company that offers
an extra 20% coverage on policies.
Last year was a milestone, with a team of 5 bilingual sales people, her
office reached the State Farm million dollar roundtable.
Protect the family, protect the future, deal with risk to take care of the
items that are most important to you.
People don’t care what
you know until they know that you care.

Group Study Exchange
GSE is always one of the highlights of
any Rotary year. Teams of young professionals from the local community between
the ages of 25 and 40, led by a Rotarian, are assembled and provided a
travel grant to a foreign country. Over four to six weeks, team
members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how
their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional
relationships, and exchange ideas.
In a typical four-week tour, the
team participates in five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 club
presentations, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days
at the host district’s conference, three to four hours per day of cultural
and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host
families.
Here in District 6990, we look
forward to hosting our visitors from other faraway Rotary districts and forming
bonds that last a lifetime. We’re also proud to send our representatives
from District 6990 to the district that we paired with to learn the customs
and business operations of that region.
This year we are exchanging teams
with District 4450, Peru. The Inbound Team is
scheduled to arrive in October 2009. Our Outbound Team is scheduled to
leave for Peru in May 2010. Applications are being taken NOW for GSE
Team Members.
Complete information is available
in the GSE brochure and the Team Member application. Contact our current
District 6990 GSE Committee Chair, Joe Roth, with questions, to
make application, or to schedule an Inbound or Return team presentation to
your club.

people, in her vacation rental home in Asheville , North Carolina .
2nd Prize – Courtesy of J.
Guarch, Rotary Club of Coral Gables – a three night stay in his 2

and use of a golf cart.
3rd Prize – Obtained by
Yoli Woodbridge, Rotary Club of Coral Gables – Sunday Brunch for four,
valued at $300.00, at the Fontana Restaurant at The Biltmore Hotel in
Coral Gables , Florida .
This fundraiser is a top priority! We need to sell
tickets to meet the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. They donated $355
million in the last two years. Of that amount $200 million is a matching
grant for polio eradication. Our district is expected to donate $300,000.
We have raised $195,000 towards this
goal to date. The balance is $105,000 yet to be raised. If
the 2,100 district’s club members can all sell just 2 tickets this year at
$25 per ticket, we’d sell 4,200 tickets.
Rotary International’s
Leadership Structure

The base of Rotary International (RI) is, of course, the over
32,000 Rotary clubs that exist throughout the world. Each club
belongs to the global association of RI. The individual club elects its own
officers and enjoys considerable freedom within the framework of Rotary’s
constitution and bylaws.
Districts are comprised of groups of individual
clubs geographically located close to each other. There are approximately
530 RI districts, with 50 or so clubs in a district. We are a part of
District 6990 that comprises South East Florida (Broward and Miami-Dade
Counties ), the Florida Keys and Grand Bahama Island . The district
administration, including assistant governors and various committees,
guides and supports the club.
The RI Board is made up of a 19-member Board of
Directors. It includes the RI president and president-elect. The
board meets quarterly to establish policies. The Board controls and manages
RI affairs and funds in conformity with the RI Constitution and Bylaws.
Each director serves a two-year term. Traditionally, the RI president, who
is elected annually, develops a theme and emphasis for the year.
The Secretariat is headquartered in Evanston , Illinois
, with seven international offices in Argentina , Australia , Brazil ,
India , Japan , Korea , and Switzerland . RI also has offices in Great
Britain and Ireland that serves that region. The General Secretary is the
active managing officer and heads a 650-member staff working to serve
Rotarians worldwide.
The Council on Legislation is Rotary’s “parliament”. It
meets every three years to deliberate and act upon all proposed enactments
and resolutions submitted to Council. The Council is an important part of
Rotary’s governance process. It is where Rotary clubs have their say in the
governance of the association.
Each district sends a representative to the Council and every
club and district is entitled to submit legislation. Some of Rotary’s most
important work has resulted from Council action. Council action admitted
women into Rotary in 1989 and PolioPlus was created in 1986. The next
Council on Legislation is tentatively scheduled for April 2010.
The final leadership group in Rotary is the Trustees of The
Rotary Foundation. Fifteen directors are appointed to the Rotary
Foundation by the RI president, with the agreement of the RI board. These
Trustees manage all business of the Foundation. Each trustee is appointed
to a four-year term, with the chair serving only for a year.
All of these diverse groups combine together to make the
leadership structure for RI a strong and competently run organization. With
the flexibility to change with the times, Rotary will be a vital part of
the global community now, as well as in the future.

Service,

DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘CAUSE YOU
WERE AWAY?
Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

It’s my
birthday. It’s my birthday. It’s my birthday!
If you miss a
meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the
missed meeting date.
For online
make-ups:
Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club
to make up an absence.
Attendance
credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an
alternative to making up a meeting at another club.
To
earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of
subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.
How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?
Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with
computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary
Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way
to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year,
Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of
these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting
programs and applied for make-up credit.
Here’s what you have to do
to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf
It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the
website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by
the principles of the 4 Way Test).
1. Read a variety of current articles in the programs
section and/or choose articles from the Archived Programs list and/or
information from the Avenues of Service pages. You will be required to
answer questions. There is space on the makeup request form for up to three
articles to be reviewed, however you will need to read more than three to
meet your 30 minute visit obligation.
2. At the end of your 30 minute visit, click on
Make-up Request Form from the drop-down menu at the top of the page OR the
bottom of each make-up program.
3. Read the Makeup Request Form carefully, and follow
instructions. The form will appear once you press the SUBMIT button (one
time only) and an email copy will be sent to the email address you proved.
This can be forwarded to your club secretary so your attendance records are
properly updated.
Rotarians can also
designate eClub One as their home club.
Members in eClub One are
usually experienced Rotarians who are unable to belong to a traditional
club because they reside in a remote location or they are engaged in a
demanding travel schedule. Those applying for membership in eClub One must
provide an endorsement from their current District Governor, current Rotary
club President, along with letters of reference from two Rotarian
colleagues of their current club..
eClub One has standard requirements for memberships,
including charges for dues and administrative fees. Participants also must
be willing to take part regularly in the Rotary eClub One community by
taking on tasks and responsibilities. Members are required to also have
regular access to the Internet and be willing to acquire the necessary
skills to participate in the activities of Rotary eClub One.
Rotary and eClub One are on the cutting edge of the
technology age. How this evolves will only be determined by periodic
evaluation and the involvement of its members. For today, however, it is an
outstanding tool for Rotarians to makeup missed meetings and keep in touch
with Rotary happenings throughout the world.
