MARTY ROSEN:

If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

With Enron, you would have $16.50 left of the original $1000.

With WorldCom, you would have less than $5.00 left.

If you had purchased $1000.00 of Delta Airlines stock you would have $49.00 left.

If you had purchased United Airlines, you would have nothing left.
But, if you had purchased $1000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for recycling, you would have $214.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

This is called the 401-Keg Plan.

The India Medical Mission Trip in February 2009

ROTARY ZONE 34 – LED BY DISTRICT 6990

Noelle Galpern is a member of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables.  She is a Strategy and Management Consultant who is deeply involved in Rotary International’s Polio Eradication efforts, including the $100M Gates Challenge Grant, the District 6990 Helicopter Golf Ball Drop polio fundraiser.   Her next great challenge is the National Immunization Day trip to Northern India scheduled for February 2009.  This will be her third medical mission to India.

Participate in a national immunization day and personally vaccinate dozens of underprivileged children with the oral vaccine needed to protect them against the polio virus.

Polio is a contagious, historically devastating disease that was virtually eliminated from the Western hemisphere in the second half of the 20th century.  Although polio has plagued humans since ancient times, its most extensive outbreak occurred in the first half of the 1900’s before the vaccination, created by Jonas Salk, and became widely available in 1955.  At the height of the polio epidemic in 1952, nearly 60,000 cases with more than 3,000 deaths were reported in the US alone.

Nowadays, children under 3 are 50% of the victims.  There is still NO cure for polio – only vaccinations against acquiring it.

Rotary’s project is the largest worldwide unprecedented partnership which includes WHO,  Unicef, CDC, and the Gates Foundation.

In 1988, there were 1,000 new cases per day in 200 endemic countries.  In 2007, there was a 99% decrease – just over 1,000 cases a year. India represents 66% of new cases.

This trip is sponsored by Rotary Zone 34 and District 6990 to occur sometime in February 2009 as Immunization Day in India. They are expecting 40-80 Rotarians to volunteer.   There will be home stays in Chandigarh for fellowship.

Visit a polio rehabilitation hospital and an integrated abilities school in Delhi to see firsthand the devastating effects of polio and how afflicted individuals overcome their illness with Rotary’s help.

NID – Immunization Day is a supplementary mass immunization program to complement the routine immunizations.

Each child under five years of age receives two drops of oral vaccine no matter what their status.  They immunize children 5 years multiple times.   Mark the little finger of the children vaccinated which remains for 2-3 days.  The sanitary conditions in India make it particularly difficult to maintain the polio free status.  The vaccine has to be absorbed into the system through digestion.  If the child has poor digestive health, then the vaccine passes through without protective effects.

The volunteers use no gloves when vaccinating the children as it sends the wrong message to the population.  They use antibacterial gels to wash their hands.

4-5 days - day 1 is booth day, on Sunday health care workers and volunteers sets up booths in high trafficked areas such as schools, religious centers, and transportation center hubs.

Banners are posted to announce the day.  Happening for twenty years and the population knows to go to the booths.

Northern India is targeted this year.  183 million children is the goal.  Detailed tracking and cold chain maintenance - # of children is known by locals

The virus in chambers must be in coolers (funded by Unicef) to save them from a lifetime of paralysis.
