President Mike referred the members to a handout left on the tables by our Crafts Festival Chair Diana Phillips, describing important, yet unfulfilled positions for the Craft Fest. They include a computer-savvy person who can convert material to a MAC-compatible disk and a distributor with a van or truck. Additionally, someone who can review and update or replace signage; someone with a laptop and printer that can function at the festival HQ’s for both days, as someone who possesses and is handy with tool, to be available to work in the HQ to respond to emergency situations that may arise. Don’t be shy . . . contact Diana at 305-235-1192 and let her know you’re available.

MATCHING FUNDS – NOVEMBER IS FOUNDATION MONTH

The Board of Directors has authorized up to $1,500.00 to be available for matching contributions to The Rotary Foundation. Funding is available on a first come/first serve basis and limited to $125.00 per Rotarian. What a great way to support our Foundation this month, which is Foundation month. Remember, you only need a $100.00 contribution to become a Paul Harris Sustaining Member. Mike pointed out that the $125.00 is the Club’s per capita goal for November and that the tax-deductible receipt that you receive from the Foundation would only reflect the amount you contribute – not the matching amount – although the total amount would be credited towards you Paul Harris Fellowship. Make your checks payable to: The Rotary Foundation, and submit them Foundation Chair Kathy Miller.

FUN-DRAISER

President Mike then brought up a new fundraising activity suggested by Past President Linda Kaplan based on her experience with the Rotary Master Card. As an affinity card, Linda thought that a percentage of her charges would go to The Rotary Foundation. However, after using the card for $75.00, she received a check for $25.00 made out the, “The Rotary Club of . . . “ Linda also suggested we consider selling the Entertainment Book as another Club project. As you may know, the Entertainment Book is filled with discount coupons from local retailers and restaurants and makes a great holiday gift. If every member sold just two books, we’d easily exceed the $100 total sales mark and get a higher percentage of the total dollars sold. Linda also pointed out that this project requires far less energy and effort than the Garage Sale. At a post-meeting podium Board Meeting, anticipating each member selling at least two books, we could easily sell over 100 books, thus qualifying for a larger piece of the overall sales. The board approved the project.

At the request of Maxene Graham, President Mike gave an update on the Murray Park project. As you know, as part of the 100th anniversary of Rotary, the Club made a significant donation to the City for lighting at Murray Park. In exchange, the city agreed to name the lighted field as “Rotary Field at Murray Park.”  Once the sign is crafted, it will become a plaque mounted in the park for all to see.

November Program Pansy Graham introduced

Dr. Duncan Haynes, Ph.D and author of five science fiction novels

This renowned author who goes under the pen name of Dirk Wyle.

Dr. Haynes is a 30-year veteran of biomedical science, having taught at the University of Miami while doing research on abnormal blood clotting and ions in the blood. Successfully commercializing his research in drug micro-encapsulation enabled Dr. Haynes to retire early.

Inspired by the works of Sinclair Lewis, Tom Clancy and John Grisham, pioneers in using medical science as the basis of mystery thrillers, Haynes began writing thrillers and currently has five books on the market – a series using the same characters in different settings. His characters, Ben Candini, Ph.D. and his girl friend Rebecca Levis, M.D., are placed in different settings, yet, a la the CSI programs, use science to solve mysteries.

His first book, Pharmacology is Murder a student is sent to Pharmacology School under the guise of earning his Ph.D. and discovers who poisoned a professor.

His second book, Biotechnology is Murder, places the Ben and Rebecca in a Medical School that’s getting $40 Million for developing a new drug.

In his third book, Medical School Murder a whistleblower is dies, and Ben takes over the Lab and determines how and who did the killing.

Amazon Gold finds our heroes solving the murder mystery while surveying the Rain Forest for plants that have medicinal values for modern drugs.

The next in the series is Bahamas West End is Murder and the heroes are on vacation when they discover a sinking boat with a dead body on it. They salvage the boat, report the dead body to the Bahamian police who seem too laid back to pursue the crime. Yet, the story is full of flying bullets and exciting chase scenes, says Wyle.
