Armistice Day is the anniversary of the official end of World War I, November 11, 1918. It commemorates the truce signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." Woodrow Wilson in 1919 discussed reflection of gratitude to the participants. In many parts of the world, people take two minutes of silence at 11:00 in the morning as a sign of respect for the roughly eight million who died in the war.

To honor all those who served, on May 24, 1954, the holiday’s official name was changed to Veterans Day.

PATRICIA PARDINAS, RCCG / CYCLING TO SERVE:

Hi Everyone;

For our Cycling to Serve Ride in December 2nd Ride we need to get going on the “Tots to Teen Helmets & Gloves” Drive.  We will need:

1) Gifts Donations;
2) Volunteers (non-riders & riders) for the December 2nd ride.

Youth Cyclist:  We are working with Interact Clubs in Miami High, Palmetto and Coral Gables in raising their involvement in the sport of Cycling and offering incentives (gloves, helmets and bikes) to do their own “start-up” Cycling Clubs.  I’ll keep you posted on that, as it may become a police sponsored activity (offshoot of our rides) to get kids off streets and out of neighborhood gangs.

Foundation Month

MATCHING FUNDS – NOVEMBER IS FOUNDATION MONTH

The Board of Directors has authorized up to $1,500.00 to be available for matching contributions to The Rotary Foundation. Funding is available on a first come/first serve basis and limited to $125.00 per Rotarian. What a great way to support our Foundation this month, which is Foundation month. Remember, you only need a $100.00 contribution to become a Paul Harris Sustaining Member. Mike pointed out that the $125.00 is the Club’s per capita goal for November and that the tax-deductible receipt that you receive from the Foundation would only reflect the amount you contribute – not the matching amount – although the total amount would be credited towards you Paul Harris Fellowship. Make your checks payable to: The Rotary Foundation, and submit them Foundation Chair Kathy Miller.

During this campaign, our club will matching your donation up to $150. When your donation is sent to Rotary International’s Foundation is will look as if you sent double.  For tax purposes, only the amount you sent is deductible.  However, the doubled amount is applied towards a Paul Harris Fellowship in your honor. Currently $850 remains of matching funds.

Foundation has put Rotary on the map around the world.  Your support of its magnificent work puts it in the forefront of world leaders’ minds.

The work of Rotary is to fill the gap of service.  Every club around the world has the same framework of service.  The clubs and districts are structured to support our ideals – such as Youth Service:  exchange programs, peace scholars to be negotiators and moderators.

Understand other cultures and strive for peace.  Example:  Group Study Exchange – the mission is to share career and life stories, network and form bonds.

In the 1980’s the goal to eradicate Polio in the world was a dream.  Successes brought the World Health Organization to ask Rotary to add other inoculations during the Polio campaign which is why the program’s name became Polio Plus. Rotary has a non-voting member of the UN because of this effort.

Currently, only two countries are not polio-free:  Iraq and Afghanistan

The SHARE program – RI guarantees that 60% of member’s contribution is reinvested in the district it derived from.  The administrative fees sits in an investment account for 3 years. The return on interest of that investment is used for administrative costs.

When our Foundation Chair asks for support – please realize the amazing results that occur from your donation.
