Dr. Roseyln Gonas
New Orleans Rebuilding: Caring for the Caregivers

The Department of Health from the City of New Orleans wrote our club a thank you letter:

“for your role in donating the laptop computer and projector to the New Orleans Public Health Department.” This sorely needed equipment is already being put to use training providers in evacuation procedures for the 2006 hurricane season. As you may know, with so many of our residents still living in FEMA trailers, we will have to evacuate thousands of people if winds this year reach even tropical storm strength. Your generous contribution is already helping to keep thousands of children and families safe.

Following storm season it will be used in the provision of health care services to adults and children throughout the New Orleans area. Again, with sincere thanks, we truly appreciate your donation.”

Roz, visited New Orleans approximately one year post Hurricane Katrina. Examples of how slow the progress towards normalcy are going: the hospital she was assigned to work at had no viable electricity, shells of homes remain without windows, doors, and filled with mold, most neighborhoods have had only 1/3 of the residents returned. She witnessed first-hand the stages that the victims and their caregivers are living through. After the shock of the tragedy - victims experience heroism from themselves and others. Millions of dollars came forth and everyone wanted to help. However, after that period, the limelight faded. The media turned its attention elsewhere. All involved feel forgotten.

The tragedy occurred in 2005. During the long restoration period, survivors are not able to feel secure – in their housing, in their neighborhoods, in their work…

Trauma can manifest as post traumatic syndrome, depression, substance abuse, or even the internalizing of stress so it bubbles up with physical, mental and emotional problems. Helping victims survive this period – offering them assistance – reduces the effects of trauma.

Our club’s involvement, as well as our Hunting and Fishing Fellowship, in sending one computer laptop resulted in the Archdiocese sending Roz a thank you for remembering the true need. Within twelve hours of receipt, it was in use. It has been used every day since.

Fill the gap – do not forget. Your actions are meaningful and make a difference. Contact the New Orleans agencies directly if you wish to offer assistance.

Without cause, sunflowers have begun to grow all over New Orleans. They are a symbol of the renewal and rebirth of the city and this area.
