WORLD ATLAS GIVEAWAY

President Bill Enright, Past Presidents Linda Kaplan and Ellen Book helped to distribute 360 free atlases to sixth graders from Coconut Grove's George W. Carver Middle School on Friday, November 21st. The atlases were provided by the South Miami Rotary and were distributed along with a geography quiz.

Last year, RCSM provided dictionaries and atlases to every child in S. Miami  at a cost of $2,800 to fulfill this project. We applied to our District 6990, in a grant application requesting $2,000 to expand it to other schools.  The money you donate today comes back to us to fund our own projects.

The next Atlas + Dictionary Giveaway will be

Tuesday, December 9th

in the morning before our weekly meeting at the
South Miami K-8 Center located at 6800 SW 60th Street, Miami, FL 33143. 305-667-8847 Ext. 119

Charitable IRA Rollover provides a new way to support Rotary

Rotary International News -- 18 November 2008

Provisions in the Pension Protection Act of 2006 and the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 can help you make an immediate gift in support of The Rotary Foundation. The act's provisions allow for the direct transfer of any amount up to $100,000 each year until 31 December 2009 from an individual retirement account to The Rotary Foundation without triggering federal income tax. The contribution counts toward the required minimum distribution and is available to people age 70½ or older.

There are several ways to direct how a donation is allocated in order to create a customized legacy. Please contact The Rotary Foundation to learn how your generosity could be used exactly how you wish.

If you’d like to learn more about using a Charitable IRA Rollover to make a generous contribution for any amount up to $100,000, The Rotary Foundation staff is here to help. Please contact 847-866-3100 or plannedgiving@rotary.org.

Programming Chair Dr. Darryl Downs introduced someone most of us know.  November is Rotary Foundation Month – and letting us know how to reduce our tax load we have our own…

ED FISCHER, VICE PRESIDENT
SPEAK OUT, INC.
 (305) 669-1449 / ed@speakoutinc.com

President Elect Pansy Graham with Past President Ed Fischer

As most of you know, November is Rotary Foundation Month.  Part of the reason November was selected, is to give Rotarians time before year-end, to make a tax-deductible donation.  If asked what we know about the Rotary Foundation, some of us may know very little, while others know more and still there are others among us who possess a great deal of knowledge.

Today we are going to be reminded of and/or learn a great deal about our Rotary from our speaker.

Our very own Rotarian Ed Fischer has been in the club since 1982.  He is a past president of the RCSM and a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.  Over the years, Ed has served his club as Bulletin Editor, Program Chair, Public Relations Chair, Membership Chair, Director of club Service, and Director of Vocational Service.  Additionally, Ed has served District 6990 as Chair for the Membership and Education and Retention committee, the Planned Giving Subcommittee.  Up until this year, Ed served as the District’s Communication Committee chairperson for eight years producing The Rotary Moments - an educational E-News blurb about Rotary.  Ed has also been a presenter at District Conventions, the S4TL program and at PETS – the President-Elect Training Seminar.  Currently, Ed is an Asst. Governor for our club along with the others here in South Dade.

Professionally, Ed is VP of Speak Out, Inc. a communications and training company – and until recent budget cuts, Ed was an Adjunct Professor of FIU’s Speech Communication’s Dept. Ed holds a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree from Barry University and a Masters of Science in Adult Education/Human Resource Development from FIU.

When it comes to donated to the Rotary Foundation, Ed says, “that which you share, multiplies; that which you withhold, diminishes!”

ANNUAL PROGRAMS FUND CONTRIBUTIONS
PURPOSE: Provide the necessary funding for operation of Rotary Foundation programs. Visit www.rotary.org for additional information, including ways to give.

HOW the FUND works: Contributions made by individuals, clubs, and districts are invested for three years. After three years · 50 percent of the original contribution is returned to the district through the DDF. · 50 percent of the original contribution is provided to the World Fund to support humanitarian programs and provide one Group Study Exchange per district every year. · Investment earnings support administrative costs and may be used to benefit the Foundation’s humanitarian and educational programs.

RECOGNITION: Gifts to the Annual Programs Fund count toward Paul Harris Fellow Recognition, Multiple Paul Harris Fellow Recognition, Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member Recognition, and Major Donor Recognition.

Money gets spread around the foundation to accomplish making this a better world in which to live and to share knowledge with other countries through Rotary.

World Fund includes funding for:

1.   Group Study Exchanges – a professional between 25-40 gets nominated

2.   District Simplified Grants – matching funds to conduct service projects

3.   Ambassadorial Scholars

Paul Harris Fellowship

Paul Harris Fellows are individuals recognized by Rotary for substantial donations made in support the Rotary Foundation Annual Programs Fund.

Anyone who contributes, or in whose name is contributed, a gift of $1,000 USD or more to the Annual Programs Fund may become a Paul Harris Fellow. Each new Paul Harris Fellow receives a commemorative certificate, a Paul Harris Fellow pin, and a medallion. Donors are eligible for Paul Harris Fellow recognition when their cumulative giving reaches $1,000 USD.

For additional gifts totaling $1,000 USD or more, a Paul Harris Fellow ...

  • Is recognized as a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
  • May also choose to honor someone else as a Paul Harris Fellow with their Foundation Recognition Points, formerly called "available credit" .
  • Is eligible to receive a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow pin with additional stones.

Sustaining Membership

A Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member (formerly called a Paul Harris Sustaining Member) is a person who contributes $100 USD or more per year to the Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund.

Without sustained support of the Annual Programs Fund, the programs of The Rotary Foundation cannot happen. With contributions of $100 from every member every year, Rotary could nearly double its efforts to help needy people the world over, supporting the continued growth of programs.

All gifts given through the Sustaining Member program go to the Annual Programs Fund and are eligible for and count cumulatively toward the Foundation’s various recognition programs, including recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow after $1,000 USD has been contributed.

Each and every Sustaining Member gift to the Rotary Foundation is a gift of hope to those less fortunate. Every gift truly makes a difference in someone's life. 100% of the money donated to the Foundation is used in programs. Funds contributed in any given year are invested for three years before being spent on programs. This ensures that all contributed dollars go directly to programs; only investment earnings are used to pay administrative costs.

Sustaining Member

Anyone who contributes US$100 or more per year to the Annual Programs Fund  is automatically recognized as a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member.

Sustaining Members are critical to the Foundation. If every club member contributed $100 every year, Rotary could nearly double its efforts to help needy people worldwide and support the continued growth of its programs.

All gifts cumulatively count toward other Foundation recognition programs .

Benefactor

You may become a Benefactor  by making the Permanent Fund  a beneficiary in your estate plans or by donating $1,000 or more to the fund outright.

Bequest Society

Couples or individuals who have made commitments of $10,000 or more in their estate plans, such as in a will, living trust, or through whole or universal life insurance, can become Bequest Society members.

All Bequest Society members receive recognition from the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation. Donors may elect to receive an engraved crystal recognition piece and a Bequest Society pin. You must ask to become a Bequest Society member by filling out a form .

Paul Harris Fellow

Donors of US$1,000 or more to the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, or the Humanitarian Grants Program, or people who have that amount contributed in their name, can be recognized as Paul Harris Fellows .

Major Donor

The Rotary Foundation recognizes couples or individuals whose combined personal outright or cumulative giving has reached $10,000. All outright contributions made to the Foundation are included in this total, regardless of the gift designation.

Where does the money go?

Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants

Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants are awarded to fund large long-term international self-help and grassroots development projects that use an integrative approach to address humanitarian needs. An integrative approach incorporates multiple program components, including a combination of sustainable factors such as training, community participation, capital assets, and technical expertise from Rotarians and other sources.

Projects must be self-sustaining after the 3-H grant funds have been spent. All projects must involve Rotary clubs or districts in at least two countries, with a significant number of Rotarians actively participating in the project.

To be eligible for a 3-H grant, the primary host and international sponsor clubs or districts must have successfully worked together as primary sponsors of a Matching Grant project within five years of submitting their 3-H application. The sponsors must contribute at least 10 percent of the 3-H grant award amount. Grants range from US$100,000 to $300,000.

Volunteer Service Grants

Volunteer Service Grants support qualified Rotarians and their spouses traveling internationally to provide a needed service or plan a needed project in a community. Eligibility for travelers is based on:

1.   A defined community need

2.   A need that can be met by the team’s experience and skills

3.   An understanding that the skills and experience are not available in the community

The award is a flat grant of US$3,000 for an individual or $6,000 for a team of up to five members. A single project site may not benefit from more than one grant award at any given time. An individual volunteer may receive no more than two Volunteer Service Grants per Rotary year.

Rotary World Peace Scholarships

Rotary World Peace Scholarships for study at The Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution

The Rotary Foundation has taken a bold and critical step in its commitment to world understanding and peace with the establishment of the Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution. The Rotary Centers for International Studies will provide opportunities for scholars to focus on dealing effectively with obstacles, such as war, famine, poverty, and disease, that currently impede international cooperation and peace. Through partnerships with universities throughout the world, the Rotary Centers for International Studies will advance knowledge on issues of peace and conflict resolution among the next generation of community and world leaders.

Rotary is an icon in the world of non-profits by keeping all of the contributions going to the causes.

Before the end of the year, dip into your pocketbooks and make this world a better place to live.

Give

Give and

Give more.

If  it is to be, it’s up to thee
