Our newest Paul Harris Fellow is

Brett Bernard Trembly

The fellowship was established in 1957 for humanitarian and educational projects to save and invigorate opportunities to build world peace and understanding for millions of persons around the globe.

Lovingly stated by Brett’s father, Jeff:

Brett’s grandfather passed away in June.  His brother, his father and Brett each inherited a bit of money.  Brett received the PHF with those funds.  His grandfather had 38 years of perfect attendance.

DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘CAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

http://www.spacecenterrotary.info/links1964-65/ClubBanner.png

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

1.  Read a variety of current articles in the programs section and/or choose articles from the Archived Programs list and/or information from the Avenues of Service pages. You will be required to answer questions. There is space on the makeup request form for up to three articles to be reviewed, however you will need to read more than three to meet your 30 minute visit obligation.

2.  At the end of your 30 minute visit, click on Make-up Request Form from the drop-down menu at the top of the page OR the bottom of each make-up program.

3.  Read the Makeup Request Form carefully, and follow instructions. The form will appear once you press the SUBMIT button (one time only) and an email copy will be sent to the email address you proved. This can be forwarded to your club secretary so your attendance records are properly updated.

Rotarians can also designate eClub One as their home club.

Members in eClub One are usually experienced Rotarians who are unable to belong to a traditional club because they reside in a remote location or they are engaged in a demanding travel schedule. Those applying for membership in eClub One must provide an endorsement from their current District Governor, current Rotary club President, along with letters of reference from two Rotarian colleagues of their current club..

eClub One has standard requirements for memberships, including charges for dues and administrative fees. Participants also must be willing to take part regularly in the Rotary eClub One community by taking on tasks and responsibilities. Members are required to also have regular access to the Internet and be willing to acquire the necessary skills to participate in the activities of Rotary eClub One.

Rotary and eClub One are on the cutting edge of the technology age. How this evolves will only be determined by periodic evaluation and the involvement of its members. For today, however, it is an outstanding tool for Rotarians to makeup missed meetings and keep in touch with Rotary happenings throughout the world.

For make-ups anywhere around the world when traveling internationally: http://rotary.org/support/clubs/index.html

Informed Families

Miami (Corporate Headquarters)
2490 Coral Way, Miami, FL 33145 / (305) 856-4886

http://cmif.pictco.org/default.asp?pagenum=550

Margaret has  known about Rotary ever since she wrote a newspaper article about the first female Rotarian in Colombia, Missouri club where she went to college.

The organization’s past Chairman was Detective Henry Guzman (SMPD)

Its current Chairman is Javier Hernandez-Lichl, CEO SM Hospital

THE NUMBER ONE REASON KIDS GIVE FOR NOT USING DRUGS IS THEIR PARENTS!  However, 40% of parents believe they have little influence on their children's drug use. Worse, 50% of parents expect their children will use drugs.

When we ask kids what they would like us to do to help with the drug problem, the surprising answer is " talk to our parents about drugs."

Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is a broad-based, grass roots volunteer/parent organization that is affiliated with the National Family Partnership. Informed Families is an education, training and support center for parents, schools and communities to help raise safe, healthy and drug-free children.

We teach people how to say no to drugs and how to make healthy choices. To reduce the demand for drugs, Informed Families has focused its efforts on educating and mobilizing the community, parents and young people in order to change attitudes. In this way we counteract the pressures in society that condone and promote drug and alcohol use and abuse. The organization educates thousands of families annually about how to stay drug and alcohol free through networking and a variety of programs and services .

Informed Families offers children's substance abuse prevention activities in various locations throughout the State of Florida. The agency is headquartered in Miami, other service locations include the Orlando and Pensacola Regions.

Visualize when something doesn’t happen, it’s hard to quantify alcohol and drug prevention.

What is a coalition?

Must bring together a group to get perspective and stake holders into a coalition – those that are impacted by the issue at hand.

A team whose members fulfill unique roles

Shared vision, mission and purpose.

Founded in 2003 by Informed Families and a group of community-minded representatives from business, government, law enforcement, health care, education and the faith community.

Funded in part by the Office of National Drug Control Policy to target underage alcohol, tobacco, and drug use.

Our vision is healthy and alcohol-free and drug free youth in S. Miami

Our mission is together the SMDFC and its partners will create a healthy community through education and prevention

Six billion dollars a year are spent by the alcohol industry to promote this product.

Target at younger and younger:  hard tea, hard punch, hard lemonade

~Usage in all grades surveyed is up despite a higher perception of risk.

~Age of first use has remained the same for the past four years, but is still low.  Middle schoolers report trying alcohol or marijuana first between age 10 and 13; for high schoolers it is between age 13 and 15.

~24% of 8th graders report drinking in the past 30 days; 44% of seniors do.

~Students believe their parents would disapprove of cigarette and marijuana use more than alcohol use.

~They also believe that smoking cigarettes is more harmful than drinking alcohol

Source:  Communities that Care Survey, 2008

Addressing the Problem:

     Reduce access to alcohol

Improve policies and enforcement

Monitor use rates

Educate parents and community members about the dangers to kids.

When societal views become relaxed towards substance abuse, the next generation considers the use to have little penalty.

Pill mills in Broward County.  Narcotics and prescription medicines need to be properly disposed

Family Day – the coalition sponsors a  family meal.  This is to encourage families to sit down together 3-5 times per week – time spent together being present in our kid’s lives makes them turn away from drug usage.

Moving Forward:

Develop formal partnership with city of S. Miami

Continue building coalition membership

Increase awareness of the coalition’s vision and mission

Implement multiple strategies to reduce substance use

All to support the goal….safe, healthy, drug-free and alcohol free youth in S. Miami

How can you help?

Talk to your kids / grandkids/ nieces / nephews about alcohol and   other drugs

Monitor what’s happening in the community

Volunteer with an organization that serves youth, especially kids at risk

Get involved: Join the coalition!
