Inbound GSE Team from the Phillipines

The Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business people and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. RI District 6990 is looking for 5 GSE team members for this year’s trip to Quezon City in the Philippines, which is RI District 3780. Deadline for applications is December 8th, 2008. Click here for application form. For more information, contact GSE Chair Yolanda (Yoli) Woodbridge at 305-301-5024 or email her.

Lighting Design

MFA - Yale School of Drama, BFA - North Carolina School of the Arts
ROBERT PERRY is an Assistant Professor of Lighting Design for the Department of Theatre Arts and the resident lighting designer for the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre. He has designed the lighting for numerous productions Off and Off-Off Broadway as well as many regional theatres including: The Goodman Theatre, LaJolla Playhouse, Chicago Shakespeare, Dallas Theater Center, Mc-Carter Theatre, Intiman Theatre, Hartford Stage and Studio Arena. Awards include a Dean Goodman Choice Award for The Skin of Our Teeth (California Shakespeare Festival), an AUDELCO Award for Crowns (2nd Stage, NYC) as well as a Drama Desk Nomination for his design of The Water Engine (Atlantic Theater, NYC). Mr. Perry received a Masters Degree of Fine Arts from Yale University and a BFA from North Carolina School of the Arts.

Mr. Perry is also a well known light sculptor.

Artist Statement

Metal is my muse and lighting is my life.

We live in an industrial world and in this world often things are discarded for something new and improved.  This is where I come in.  I often seek inspiration in recycled materials.  I visit scrap metal yards and look for discarded treasures.  Whether it be an old aluminum fan blade, a set of kitchen utensils or perhaps a piece of an automobile, I will find a way to light it up and make it come to life.  By combining the natural qualities of light and shadow with the strength and harshness of raw metal, unique sculptures are formed.

As a lighting sculptor, I utilize primarily aluminum, stainless steel, recycled materials, found objects and industrial scrap metal in my lighting structures.

Within the walls of my workshop, each design is created and evolved.  My process begins not from initial design sketches, but from looking at the materials that I have available and pulling out of each item its true potential as opposed to covering it up.  Every piece of metal I find or object I manipulate has the potential to become something wonderful. This hands-on process allows me to sculpt each piece until it becomes a completed Structure of Light.

About the Artist

Considered by many to be an Artisan of Light, designer Robert
Perry has spent years earning his living as an award winning theatrical
lighting designer.  In the Spring of 2002, Robert incorporated the
skills that he learned in the theatrical world and formed the design
company “Structures of Light” in the Greenwich Village section of
New York City.  By  combining the creativity of sculpture and the
beautiful effects of light and shadow, Robert is dedicated to
creating unique handcrafted lighting  sculptures and fixtures.  His
designs not only convey a sense of rawness and strength, but also of
passion, honesty and humor.

Robert relocated his lighting studio in 2004 to the artistic community of Miami where he lives with his wife,
Cindy and their son, Jack.

He  is also available for commissioned pieces and consultation services. In addition, if you have your own "treasure" or "found object" that you would like made into a Structure of Light,  contact designer Robert Perry directly and he will illuminate it for you.

The idea behind his art is recycled materials which is relevant to today’s green society. Bringing materials back to life as artwork.  Some are humorous or comical. For example, using forks and spoons in a circle, a cheese grater shade, old toasters from the 50’s with lightbulbs and mixing bowl shade or an over-the-top  blender with the glass as a shade with tubular bulbs

He’ll make pieces for various occupations – he used one for artists, musical instruments with a automobile horn and trumpet, an old film reels from MGM studios and a movie camera to feel like a projector with a little bit of reel left on it, gardening cans with lit flowers from the bulbs, used bicycle parts to represent a ferris wheel…

He has been featured on a HDTV’s Coast to Coast episode.

His work has been used in television shows such as The Great New Wonderful an Burn Notice.
