ROTARY DISTRICT’S FOUNDATION CORNER …

The Rotary Clubs of Hialeah-Miami Springs and Hinche, Centre in Haiti know the value of the Rotary Foundation. It came in the form of a $42,000 Matching Grant for funding to help provide equipment to produce Akamil for the people of Haiti.

Spearheaded by the Rotaract Club at the University of Miami, a total of $110,000 U.S. has been raised through Rotaract and Rotary Club fundraisers, district and club contributions, and the matching grant.

Rotaract of UM began raising awareness and funds in April 2006 in support of Project Medishare, which is building an Akamil Nutrition Facility & Training Center in Thomodale, Haiti, to produce the nutritional supplement and combat hunger. The Rotaract Club committed to raising funds to aid with supplies, materials and equipment needed to construct the project.

Scheduled for completion by year-end 2007, the Akamil plant will provide nutrition, jobs for the local community, sustainable revenue, and training for healthcare providers.

President Mike Mills introduced…
Mary Pettit, Executive Director,

Miami, Florida 33157

305-235-1668 ext. 253 / 305-233-5074 fax
E-mail: Deering Estate Foundation

www.thedeeringestate.com/park

This community-based support group’s mission is to raise public awareness of the Deering Estate. Mary showed a short seven-minute video that included a history of Florida including the environmental and architectural history of the Deering property.          The estate is encompasses 450 acres of pristine waterfront that was settled by Chicago billionaire industrialist James Deering, who built his fortune in agricultural machinery. After discovering the sub-tropical climate of Miami, he joined with many of the early pioneers of Miami and established his home on what is now the Deering Estate.

Additionally, he also created another Miami waterfront property, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, modeled after Renaissance-inspired architecture with its lavishly designed interiors, filled with European, Asian, and American artifacts spanning two millennia. Vizcaya was ceded to the Miami-Dade Parks Department who operates and maintain it.

The Deering Estate which includes the Richmond House, where Deering kept his original works of art from Goya, Rembrandt, and other renowned Renaissance painters is now owned by the State of Florida and, like Vizcaya, is operated by Miami-Dade County Parks Department. The originals were donated to and are housed at Chicago’s Northwestern University’s museum. The estate was devastated by Hurricane Andrew, and closed for seven years. It has since gone through $7.5 million renovations. Of both the buildings and the gardens and it remains a great place to see what Florida’s flora and fauna was like before the growth boon of the 1920s.Annually, it takes a ½ million dollars to maintain the estate and funds raised by the Foundation helps to defray the costs and take burden off the back of Florida’s taxpayers. Visitors can take guided walking eco-tours of the grounds, museum as well as canoe and pontoon boat tours.
