ROTARY THEME
2006-07

ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Linda Kaplan opened today’s meeting with a reminder of the Club’s Holiday Party, Dec. 9, at the home of Bruce Thor, 3252 Riviera Drive, in Coral Gables. Linda also thanked those members who participated as Parade Marshalls for this year’s Santa Parade of The Elves.

President Linda reported on the December Board Meeting and the terrible attendance percentage of the Club which was attributable to the poor attendance of 18 members. John Sorgie, as a one-man telephone squad, pointed out that ten of the eighteen were present at today’s meeting. Way to go, John. Now we know why they named a room after you!

John Sorgie also reported on the winners of Football Mania. President Linda shared first prize. John also praised Bob Straile for having sold the most books again, this year, implying a banner year for Cadillac/Hummer sales

Club Foundation Chair Donna Gaines presented Fabio Fernandez with his Multiple Paul Harris Fellowship pin. Way to go, Fabio!

Today’s Program…

Lydia White introduced former South Miami Rotarian Ellen R. Siegel, CFP, CLU, ChFC, CSA and president of Ellen R. Siegel & Associates, Inc. For those unaware of all the initials after Ellen’s name, here’s a primer: CFP - Certified Financial Planner; CLU – Charter Life Underwriter; ChFC – Charter Financial Consultant; CAS – Certified Senior Analyst. As most of us are aware, due to the unseasonable weather, Florida is under a Water Alert – no washing cars, no watering lawns, etc. Water specialists at the State level are analyzing the situation using four parameters: quality, quantity, time, and distribution. Bridging from water into financial planning, Ellen recommended the same parameters be used in approaching financial planning.

Quantity: look at income sources, steady paycheck, sporadic ups and downs of commission income or investment income.

Quality: check on your investments. How does your investment instruments compare against its peers? Who are the people managing the investment – their background, their track record, etc.? She suggests you have to have the courage to change if the asset no longer delivers adequately for your need or goal. Be sure you know your own tolerance for risk. Yes the greater the risk, the greater the reward; however, the risk should never be worth an ulcer or nervous breakdown. She suggests it’s your responsibility to learn and understand market forces, and be prepared to spread your assets across a broad range of investments. Although everyone’s situation is unique, as a general rule, she suggests you divide your income 1/3 savings, 1/3 investments and 1/3 spending.

Timing: Timing deals with both inflow and outflow. Do you get paid weekly, biweekly or monthly? Timing is also knowing when to buy, when to sell and is impacted by taxes, future market conditions and future needs. Ellen recommends not buying when everyone else buys. Since we all respond to greed and fear, it’s imperative we use asset allocation funding. We should sell where there is a need for cash, to supplement our retirement income and the smart investor should always hold two years of cash or cash equivalent investments for emergency situations.

Distribution: Be mindful that different products have different tax impacts and when it comes to mutual funds, which fund to buy depends on your individual tax situation and your investment goal.

Ellen left information packets for the membership to help determine what’s right for you.
