For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. RI District 6990 is looking for 5 GSE team members for this year’s trip to Quezon City in the Philippines, which is RI District 3780. Deadline for applications is December 8th, 2008. Bob Straile introduced today’s program as he is a member of this Fellowship (which is unofficially affiliated with Rotary):

Shawn Meimen and Dave Rice

International Fellowship of Hunting and Fishing Rotarians

http://fortlauderdaleairboatadventure.com/

Our speakers are members of the Davie Rotary Club

This group has been in existence for over 20 years.  They are Rotarians who want to promote fishing to inner city kids.  Most of these children have never caught a fish, never been on the water even though the ocean and the Everglades are in our own backyards.

They’ve probably taken over 1,000 kids at risk, foster kids, orphans.  They go on two trips a year in Broward and two in Dade. They take the kids fishing from drift boats.

Once a month they meet at different locations.  The fellowship consists of about 40 members who first want to change the direction our youth is taking.  Promoting fishing is goal #2.

Our speaker was very fortunate to have a grandfather with a passion for the outdoors.  He can’t imagine not having a father figure that didn’t love the outside enjoying nature.

The fellowship sends about 20 kids to wildlife camp in North Florida.  The kids spend three days outside learning about wildlife, flowers, beauty FL has to offer outside of the concrete walls.

Shawn lives three miles from the Everglades in Davie spending time on Lake Ochechobee or air boating with his kids.  He’s been in Rotary for 15 years and Dave is over has 20 in Rotary.

Rotary is the hand that reaches out across the world to help. If we don’t help, if we don’t promote and lift up inner city kids, there’ll be no one to fill our shoes in 20 – 30 years.

These children live in our own backyard, in our community.  Our members take such joy taking them out and catching their first fish, sometimes getting sea sick for the first time.

A day spent on the water with these kids, ends up being one of the best in your life.

For twenty years, we’ve been going on these trips 2-3 times. One of the last ones was a fishing trip at Flamingo Park where they rented houseboats and meet in the bay and spend F, Sat, Sun in Whitewater Bay.

At each house meeting they cook up dolphin, quail, duck and have a good ol’ bar-b-que atmosphere.

The average fishing trip takes 30-40 children. The kids are picked from Boys and Girls Club, SOS, and other organizations that support children at risk.  The youngest was age 2 but they range to 18 years old. Typically they are school aged children.

Funding for the kids to attend the programs is derived from Rotary Clubs and a Blue Fish Tournament where they pour alcohol for tips.  100% of the money received goes to the children.

RCSM gave $500 plus members dues goes to the kids, extra money for functions goes to the kids.

From our club:  Fabio is  a member – Howell – Roy – Otto Fuentes, Darryl Hickey,
The cost to join is $40 per year plus $15 per meeting.

Rotary's Fishing Fellowship promotes friendship between Rotarians who enjoy recreational fishing.  Further, it encourages social activities among its members and supports interaction between Rotarians and the youth of their respective communities so that young men and women may learn more about Rotary, sport fishing, and the value of protecting and conserving the fisheries of the world.

Rotary Fellowships encourage camaraderie and shared experience among Rotarians, and with fellowship at the core, Recreational Fellowships unite Rotarians internationally through a common activity.

The International Fellowship of Fishing Rotarians is open to any of the 1.2 million Rotarians residing in over 161 different countries where Rotary International has a presence.  Our membership includes Rotarians who fish inshore, offshore, fresh water, saltwater, fly fishing, bass fishing and, in some
