Make Your Plans to be There

Foundation-Themed Presidential Gala
In February

How often do we get a sitting Rotary International President to visit us? Considering there are 529 Districts worldwide and he only has one year in office, not as frequently as we would like. So when we have the opportunity to share the evening with Rotary’s top gun, take full advantage of it.

Sunday February 18, 2006
The Signature Grand, Davie, Florida.

PRID Bob Menconi and PDG Fred Anderson are coordinating this event, so it is sure to be a memorable and festive occasion. Mark your calendars and make your plans to be there now, as seating will be on a first come first served basis. Tickets $60. For additional details go to the District 6990 website.

Who are
The International Fellowship of Hunting and Fishing Rotarians (IFHFR)?

Formed over 20 years ago, the IFHFR is a 501© (3) charitable organization whose mission is to promote to underprivileged or handicapped children the full beneficial experience of nature and the greater outdoors.

Over 1000 children from Police Athletic Leagues, orphanages, foster agencies,  SOS Children’s Homes, cancer wards and youthful offenders from the Miami-Dade Juvenile Justice System have been sponsored for summer camps and been taken  fishing in South Florida.

During 2006 we held 3 fishing outings with approximately 90 children from Broward and Miami-Dade counties. In addition the IFHFR has already approved the funding for the attendance of 15 disadvantaged children to the Florida Elk’s Youth Camp in Umatilla, Florida during 2007.

Currently, the group meets on the second Tuesday evening of each month. We enjoy our friendships and often plan our own hunting and fishing excursions, which are paid strictly by the individuals, not the Fellowship. There are no attendance requirements – but you might miss an invitation to go fishing on a member’s airboat. We have rented houseboats in the Flamingo/Everglades National Park for weekends; hired fishing guides in the Everglades City area; hunted on private leases that our members have, from Pennsylvania, Georgia and Alabama; hunted wild boar in the Seminole Indian Reservation; and fished in Dry Tortugas. We have sponsored Fishing tournaments in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas.

Monthly meetings, alternate between Miami-Dade and Broward counties. They are usually held in a member’s home. We discuss fund raising activities and usually eat fantastic meals from successful fishing and hunting trips. During 2006, these included roast venison, pulled wild boar barbeque, grilled fish, duck, dove, elk, and alligator.

An example of a major fund raising event has been the bartending at the Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament:—A four day affair. Local businesses donate beer, wine, liquor, ice and the coolers needed for the operation. The turnout by our membership is amazing. Ten to twelve volunteers work in shifts as bartenders to quench the thirst of hundreds of tournament fishermen and onlookers for four days. We hear eager customers say, “You are the best”.

Visit www.rotary6990.org
So you need to make-up an absence, do you know what a great opportunity this can be?
Take the opportunity to visit another club, meeting new and interesting members who are business owners and community leaders.  They might be interested in the services that you provide.

For online make-ups:
http://www.rotary.org/newsroom/downloadcenter/pdfs/eclub_list.pdf
Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity. This offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club. To earn an attendance credit, Rotarians usually log on to the Web site, read online material on a range of subjects, post comments, and submit a form to the club secretary.

What is stress?

Response of the body to a perceived demand.  The inability to deal with real or imagined threat(s).

Body’s reaction to stress?

Increased heart rate, increased breathing, adrenaline rush, muscle tightening

Too little stress?

Boredom, no motivation

To much stress?

Sense of being overwhelmed, trouble with deadlines, making decisions, fatigue even after sleep, argumentative, forgetful, nagging feelings of helplessness, excessive worry

Moderate stress?

Feel energized, efficient and challenged

Chronic stress?

Repetitive demands on the body – can eventually sicken or kill; burn out

How to fail?

Blame others, ignore it, try harder, promise to be different and don’t follow through, engage in abusive behavior

Cure for stressing out?

Stop several times a day to assess whether you’re where you want to be

  1. Learn what you can change and what you cannot
  2. Understand it is human nature
  3. Simplify things – break down projects into small steps
  4. Take on no new responsibilities when under stress, no major decisions
  5. Leave work on time and take days off
  6. Examine your expectations
  7. Live in the present
  8. Do unpleasant tasks early in the morning
  9. Have fun and hang with positive people
  10. Never worry alone
  11. Keep a success diary
