Linda opened the meeting with a reminder of the importance of identifying potential sponsors for next year’s South Miami Rotary Crafts Festival handed out some additional sponsor kits.

Linda also handed out the awards for those who missed last week’s presentation by Assistant District Governor Rick Davis. Recipients for Vocational Service included Don Streaker and Jeff Jacobs. For Club Service was Carolyn Smith.

Horace Feliu extended two invitations to all club members. One, to attend the State of the City address 6:00 PM, this Friday, June 29, at South Miami Hospital’s Victor E. Clark Education Center. Free food and drink for all attendees. Also, the July 4th, celebration at Palmer Park located at SW 67 Avenue and SW 61 Street. This year’s celebration will be doubly unique as it also coincides with the City’s 80th anniversary and the Biltmore Hotel, which normally hosts fireworks for the City of Coral Gables, will not have them this year – adding to South Miami’s spectacle.

REMINDER July 6 is South Miami Rotary’s Installation Banquet at the Elks Club on Sunset Drive and SW 103 Avenue. 7:00 PM for cocktails, dinner at 8:00PM. Food, drink and dancing to live music. If you haven’t already done so, kindly RSVP by June 30th to Donna Gaines at 305-665-6390.

INSTALLATION BANQUET

Circuit Court Judge Israel (Izzy) Reyes will conduct the installation on July 6th.

Program Chair Maxene Graham

Maxene Graham introduced Lynne Cameron, Executive Director of Neighbors 4 Neighbors. Established following Hurricane Andrew, Neighbors 4 Neighbors connects those in needs with those who can help. Although it receives in-kind donations of promotional air time from CBS Channel Four, its primary financial sponsors are Bank United and the Herbert Hoover Foundation. Lynne showed short video that covered the expanded scope of services provided by Neighbors 4 Neighbors. In addition to providing information on hurricane preparedness, Neighbors 4 Neighbors often has CBS Channel Four air compelling stories of unique situations which allow viewers to respond to tragedies.

They maintain a phone bank which was responsible for establishing a fund to help the family of the gardener in Pinecrest who was tragically killed by lightening. Another recent project was donating furniture to Camilus House – the charity that provides housing for the homeless.

Neighbors 4 Neighbors also maintains a Family Fund which responds to individuals and families in crises ranging from food and shelter to helping the handicapped. During the holiday season, they maintain an Adopt-A-Family 4 the Holidays program that collects and distributes toys, food and gift certificates as well as connecting families with caring individuals, businesses, churches and synagogues to make the holiday brighter for families that would otherwise not experience the good cheer of the season. What really brightens up the volunteers at Neighbors 4 Neighbors is the post-holiday surveys that show that the majority of “adopters” stay in touch with their “adoptee” families throughout the year. One area of concern is being able to place adoptable families that have teenage children.

Lynne also pointed out that Neighbors 4 Neighbors produces an E-newsletter entitled “Cause & Effect” as a way of reaching out to those who can help. If you’d like to receive a copy, log onto their website at <www.neighbors4neighbors.org> or call Lynne at 305-593-8402. The organization’s current need is to locate a warehouse to store all the contributions of furniture, clothing and food.
